Someone Needs to Tell Our Music Editor We Also Have a Blog

Fri Aug 03, 2007 at 12:31:49 PM
Soul music legend Bobby Patterson will headline our Music Awards August 14 at the Granada. You miss this, you miss everything.

Because, see, when Jim Schutze gets pissed off at Wick Allison or Tim Rogers over at FrontBurner, he posts to Unfair Park. But when our current music editor takes issue with something written by our former music editor, she just sends him an e-mail, which makes it onto FrontBurner. And, look, we need all the posts and links we can get, Jonanna. Just a note for future reference.

But speaking of the Dallas Observer Music Awards showcase, which we are, the August 14 shindig at the Granada Theater will prove to be a don't-miss doozy, if we do say so our damned selves. It'll feature some of the best from the current Dallas scene paying homage to the best of Dallas' musical past: Don Cento and Shibboleth -- our MGs -- will be joined by the likes of Salim Nourallah, PPT, Chris Holt, Jen Nabb, Shanghai 5's Amy Curnow, Sorta, Paul Slavens and Very Special Guest Bobby Patterson will perform songs made famous by the likes of Aaron "T-Bone" Walker, the Five Americans, Boz Scaggs, the D.O.C., the Nervebreakers, Steve Miller, Meat Loaf, Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and many, many other surprise-surprise-surprises.

And, you'd best believe it, the concert and awards show will be free -- gratis, baby. All you need is a ticket or wristband -- so keep your eyes peeled, when on Monday we tell you where to pick up your Golden Ducat for what promises to be a magical musical moment. --Robert Wilonsky

Meritt...he said 'ducat' again...

Yeah, everybody bitches about whoever the editor is, sure. So accept it like it's supposed to be that way? What a load. People were bitching about Sam because he focused his wrath on the shitfest that was Deep Ellum and it turns out he was right to take on that crumbling Establishment. This ain't about Sam, though.

Ever since the new lady took over, haven't had a chance to meet her yet since she doesn't have a map to Denton, the music section that we all grew up with in a paper that we love has been a shell of itself. We take sad note every week that a show at Hailey's is listed as Rubber Gloves, a show at Rubber Gloves is listed as Secret Headquarters. It happens more than you guys seem to notice. Then there's the Roky Erickson mess, where a hoot night suddenly turned into a Double Wide gig by the man himself, revealing that your writers don't even read the ads in the Observer. Hell, the show listings a couple of weeks back were from TWO years ago, listing gigs from clubs that burned to the ground ages ago! I know that it can be hard to stay on top of things when you get busy writing your third straight weekly article about the same band or an all-midget Pink Floyd cover band is playing the House of Blues, but come on. Just act like you care. There's so much going on. Fair to Midland might actually get huge, and they are given a small blurb. A hard working band tours their ass off and releases a national album, no in depth story about what it all means. Ghosthustler plays a handful of gigs and starts getting national press, and no story about young dudes in the blog age and how they are gonna handle the hype. There's a ton of shit you guys are missing, and a ton of shit that you DO notice only to get wrong. Maybe the department focus has changed, maybe the corporate mission statement has been tightened up, but at least act like you enjoy the gig and the scoop. Merrit and Noah? We cool.

I have a great history with the Observer, as a long time reader, and having written a couple of pretty shitty articles for Ms. Hepola. The rage directed at her was from some really bad bands, so, awesome.

My music projects (Record Hop and Spitfire Tumbleweeds) and fake club (SHQ) enjoyed some good press from Sam. The rage directed at him was from the dusty confines of local cock rock hell, so, fine.

But all of the new rage I've been hearing from some people, people that DO stuff around here, some of the very best bands in Texas, it is centered on the ever-increasing flippant attitude about easy to find facts and the complete unwillingness to just dig a little deeper. WSJR does a great job documenting what's happening around here. Seems like one of the last stories Sam wrote was about the growing Blog Culture of Dallas, and just like a lot of stuff he wrote about, he saw the bigger picture.

We all used to rush to Dan's Bar on Wednesdays to pick up the new Observer and see what was going on. I can't believe how little time it took for y'all to go from the standard bearer to complete dinosaurs, the fourth best resource. Sure, I'm grumpy about it, but I am not the only one. And I hate it, because I used to love you guys.

But, hey, it's cool... Everybody always bitches about the Music Editor, right?

That was cute Robert. I appreciate you pointing this jibberish out. I was happy to see that the former music editor was Zac and not Sam. That boy was one of those typically malicious redheads. Overall, I am sure the music editor position is a tough one, hence so many formers leaving town for greener pastures.

In her term, Jonanna has been kind, positive and supportive. In these troubled times I believe this is just what the D.O. and the Dallas music scene needed. Her writing is more enjoyable than any since Zac, but his "Sack of Kittens" was honestly the funniest ever.

The Awards ceremony looks like a good bill that should be interesting and a good party, much like it always is. What's strange is, I thought it was an April event, so why it three months past due?

Frank

btw It took some big brass balls for Zac to stick around and run for mayor. Along these same lines, you staying in Big D and expressing yourself beyond music was also a smart move. Both of you sticking to your guns and loving our city enough to stay is something I truly respect!

VS says:

give me a break pat yourselves on the back DO & DOMA. to everyone else in the music world you are the biggest joke of north texas. wake up and get a clue. by the smell of yo cheese the expo date passed long ago on all that noise.
peace!

I am trying to find the blog for 7-11. I love their Slurpee products and wish to express that to their corporate headquarters...ASAP!!!

"Hey, I'm not saying I didn't make mistakes during my tenure at the Observer. I did. A lot of them."

this is a quote from zac. now, in that same article he jabs jonanna for the "don't blame me" attitude of her last column. but right here i interpret what he's saying as "hey, don't blame me either. i made mistakes but i'm so far beyond that now."

hell, i remember how there was a band in our scene that came up through the ranks, got signed to a major, recorded a damn fine album and the music editor (cough, zac) could only write about their clothing choices.

oh well, i guess zac is just understandably grumpy since the doma ballot actually gets votes.

Mike says:

I've gotta back Scott up here. I used to read the Observer music section religiously. It was vital, informative - I couldn't wait for it to come out every week...

Now the music section sucks so hard I don't even read the rest of the rag anymore - and I like the rest of the rag. That's just how hard the music section sucks now. Could the Observer have hired a music editor who was any less interested in DFW or music?
