And Your Mom Too

Categories: Local Music

Good Records’ C.J. Davis has sung the praises of Denton duo Mom for some time now (they’re on his label, Pancakes for Mattie, after all). And when we finally caught them a couple months back, we were impressed, to say the least. By running acoustic instruments into a variety of samplers and looping pedals, guitarist-cellist Joel North and violinist Bruce Blay create folktronica of the highest order, evoking everything from the nimble fretwork of the late John Fahey to the soft-around-the-edges electro-folk of Holopaw in the process.

And after hearing Little Brite, Mom’s newest EP, we can say with all confidence it’s the most beautiful local release we’ve heard so far this year. Hear for yourself tonight at the Granada Theater, where Mom celebrates their CD release with a lively assembly of North Texas’ finest experimental acts, including Tree Wave, Shiny Around the Edges, Voot Cha Index and History at Our Disposal. And just to whet your appetite, here’s "Josh Likes Me" from Little Brite, which features a cameo from C.J. himself. --Noah W. Bailey
