A DOMA Good Time

Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 09:15:00 AM
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Bobby ... Patterson!

It will be slow going around Unfair Park HQ for a while, as we try to get the ringing out of our ears from last night's Dallas Observer Music Awards ceremony at the Granada. Christ, what a special night -- and one for which we can take no credit. It belongs elsewhere -- to the Reunion Tower Revue, who breathed new life into hits that were and should have been; to the presenters, including a chief of police who looked more than a little bemused by a crowd that couldn't decide whether to cheer or boo (and did both?); to Hal Samples, who snapped many great photos for a good cause; and to our promotions department, Candy Lancaster and Jennifer Robinson, who stocked both our Saturday-night showcase and awards ceremony with booze, food and a more than a thousand folks for whom local music is as much a pleasure as it is a passion. And bless you, you winners, for showing up -- and for giving some of the best acceptance speeches I've heard in 20 years of doing DOMA. (Especially one particular 4-year-old who stuck it out till 11 p.m. Salim, that's one hell of a boy you're raising there.)

And, of course, there is Bobby Patterson, about whom we've said plenty but never enough. Don Cento, James Driscoll, Rich Martin and Matt Kellum -- Shibboleth to you; "Syphilis" to Bobby -- have big plans for the man, plans worthy not only of what Patterson's done over the last 40 years but worthy of what he's capable of doing on any given night. "Oh, my God," said a stranger standing next to me last night, as Patterson and the band tore into "Don't Be So Mean," a slice of 1968 funk that could have been 1978 punk that might well be 2008's best "new" song. And, well ... yeah.

No doubt as the fog clears we'll have more to report; have we ever mentioned that Most Amazing Musician Ever -- that is the award he took home, right? -- Chris Holt does an amazing Boz Scaggs and Meat Loaf, jeez. Till then here are couple of photos from the thousand we took last night; wish we had sound, but, hey, guess you had to be there. --Robert Wilonsky

Anyone who can pull off "Lowdown" and "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" back to back, the way Chris Holt did last night at the Granada, deserves any Music Award he can get his mitt on.

Yeah, someone oughta get Amy Curnow to cut "Stormy Monday Blues," like, as soon as possible. Because it was kind of ... breathtaking?

Hal will be uploading photos here, with the proceeds going to Family Gateway.

Can you give run down of band members and vocalist. Really enjoyed "I Confess" but don't know the singers name or background.

Pat Boyack says:

Yeah, that's what we need, another version of Stormy Monday.

BTW Robert, I love Bobby Patterson and listen to him on Soul 73 in the morning when I can but why didn't Johnny Taylor get the praise? He was a Dallas resident for decades before he died a few years ago. He was our soul legend and he was kind of ignored.

I think this says it all about Johnnie -- and about how unappreciated he was, especially here:

As for "Stormy Monday," well, we may not need another one, but, dang, this would be a fine addition.

And, Bob, I will post a complete lineup from last night's show -- just as soon as Don Cento wakes up. But the singer of "I Confess" was Andrew Huffstetler of Baboon --and I am glad he made ya proud.

As for those seeking the list of DOMA winners, well, I don't like to take anything away from the paper version of Unfair Park, in which the winners' names can be found shortly.

Last night's "I Confess" was great! Andrew Huffstetler really delivered.

brint says:

That was a damn good time. Well, at least until all those free energy drinks conspired something sinister with my usual load of alcohols.

But that's nobody's fault but my own.

Dave Walker says:

hey, is it just me, or comments from two former Nervebreakers in the blog? DOMA's would've surely honored them!!!

mediawonk says:

Pardon me if I've missed it, but is a list of winners going to be posted online soon?

P1 says:

how did Danny "I hate the P1" Balis end up doing? is there a link to the award winners?

frank says:

Enjoyed the covers of Nervebreakers - I Confess, The Telefones - Jerry Godzilla and NCM's - I Used to Know You. Reminded me of many nights at DJ's, just down the street decades ago.

And yes that's correct two Nervebreakers both on the blog and in attendance last night. Sadly two VIP's that got stuck waiting in line in the heat, for general admission to open. Naturally these guys were cool enough not to be pissed off.

Mike and Bob, my sincerest apologies -- a bottle of wine make up for the wait?

mark says:

I wonder if posting the winners on the Observer site might be a novel idea?

shake says:

Posting the winners defeats the purpose... SELL MORE PAPERS! Whaz that? Oh. Shit I guess I don't know then.

Mike Haskins says:

Hey, Robert, apology accepted. It was a great show. And I think I can speak for both Bob and myself when I ask, "What kinda wine did you have in mind?"

Joe says:

Same old crap every year. Same burnouts winning the same award in this music wasteland called Dallas.

Same old crap, huh? That's funny, because this was the first Observer award we've ever won. And the same goes for many of the other groups, PPT, Black Tie Dynasty, The Backsliders, Sarah Jaffe...wake up and check out the real Dallas music scene. There are definitely some new things going on here.
