Become One of Dallas' Card-Carrying Tourists, Courtesy UT Press

We just received our University of Texas Press Fall and Winter 2007 catalog, and toward the back we found word of a new travel book -- kinda, sorta. Titled Placenotes -- Dallas, it's actually described as a "boxed set of cards that guides you to the unique and memorable places that give Dallas its distinctive character." So it's not a book at all, see, but a box of cards sealed with a magnet.

Among the places highlighted are the usual suspects: the Arboretum, the Nasher Sculpture Center, Fair Park and, of course, Highland Park Village and NorthPark Center, because Dallas is, of course, nothing without its tony malls. Local experts will provide their commentary on the back of the cards; hey, nobody asked us. Placenotes -- Dallas will arrive in bookstores in November -- same time that UT Press is re-issuing Lady Bird Johnson's A White House Diary, which is, to say the least, good timing. --Robert Wilonsky
