St. Vincent is on Fire

• I'm all for supporting local musicians. But who says we need to support local musicians if they aren't any good? I won't go as far as the first two commenters; I don't think St. Vincent is terrible. She's just mediocre. Maybe someday she'll be good (her voice has some potential), but at this point, can you really call her a "great musician" like the third commenter? I don't think so. She also has a painfully affected stage name and, from what I've read, zero life experiences from which to draw in her songwriting. As a result, her lyrics strike me as one-dimensional, lifeless, cliched, and totally impersonal, sort of songwriting by numbers. She has a decent voice, so, like I said, I think if her writing can improve, she can be a good one someday. I'll check out the new album to see if that's the case, but from what I've heard so far, it is not.

• I had the great pleasure of seeing St. Vincent last Friday at Hailey's and when she opened for John Vanderslice and was totally blown away. She has an excellent stage presence and her guitar playing is "incendiary". While it is hard to find a counter argument to such valid and, might I add, hilarious points of contention like: "Seriously, Wilonsky, are you banging this broad? The amount of space devoted to her in the DO and on this blog is absurd." And: "Will Paul Simon PLEASE divorce Edie Brickell, marry this woman, then get her pregnant, too, so that I'll never have to hear from her again???" The Dallas Observer's support of St. Vincent is not only appropriate, but badly needed not just because Ms. Clark is a really great musician, but because she is one of a few Dallas based musicians that could break out to a major audience. Where else is St. Vincent going to get mentioned locally? The "Edge"? "KISS FM"? Give her album a shot. "Marry Me" comes out tomorrow and is one of the years best. And read Wilonsky's review of St. Vincent in last weeks Observer, its a great read. Or you could continue to miss something special.

• This is worse than listening to BAD Joni Mitchell (and it doesn't get any worse than bad Joni Mitchell, with perhaps the exception of bad Tori Amos). Will Paul Simon PLEASE divorce Edie Brickell, marry this woman, then get her pregnant, too, so that I'll never have to hear from her again??? I'm going to go listen to some Lucinda Williams to cleanse my palate of this bad taste in my ears....
