"Today" is the Greatest Day But Still One of the Most Overrated Songs Ever

Ben Kweller is no Billy Corgan, thank God.

Oh, how Ben Kweller tries valiantly to make something out that squishy Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream anthem "Today." God knows it's cuter than the original -- and more decipherable. And it's more than likely the best thing about the Pumpkins trib Spin's releasing with its July issue, featuring the likes of The Bravery, Panic! At the Disco and The New Amsterdams. You can check out Ben's cover for yourself right here.

Wanna hear Neil Young performing "White Line" in Fort Worth on November 10, 1976? It was just posted right here, along with a bunch of other old Young soundboard recordings for your harvesting. (And here are many, many pics from an Austin show the night before the one in Fort Worth.)

Dunno how long this has been around, but the other night I discovered that The Old 97's have made available for your downloading pleasure five unreleased demos and alternate takes over at their official Web site. Among 'em: Rhett Miller's drowsy but delightful demo for "Valium Waltz."

And, finally, from Thomas Jefferson High School graduate -- and Monkee, natch -- Mike Nesmith, here are a couple of his forgotten country-rock nuggets from the early 1970s, including the terrific "Tomorrow & Me," which is no "Today." --Robert Wilonsky
