HPHS's Stark Sands, up for a Tony this weekend

Our Elaine Liner will report back shortly from the press conference announcing the debut of Kevin Moriarty as the Dallas Theater Center's new artistic director. Till then, feel free to read today's New York Sun profile of Stark Sands, the Highland Park High School grad who's up for a Tony Award Sunday night for best performance by a featured actor in a play -- the play, in this case, being R.C. Sherriff's 1928 World War I drama Journey's End. Turns out that right after the Tonys, Sands is heading to Africa for a few months to shoot the HBO miniseries Generation Kill, based on Evan Wright's first-hand, frontlines account of the war in Iraq during its earliest hours.

But if that's too high-brow for ya, there's always this piece about how those America's Got Talent tryouts here a few months back were out of control. Turns out Sharon Osbourne and former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan, both judges on the NBC series, don't much like each other, and she stormed off the set during their day in Dallas last March. Mrs. Ozzy didn't like the way Piers bit the heads off two contesants -- one a 12-year-old, the other a mere 8 years old. --Robert Wilonsky
