Pickens is Blowin' in the Wind

Categories: News

An Amarillo TV station's reporting that T. Boone Pickens is puttin' in the Panhandle what oughta be the country's -- and, mebbe, the world's -- biggest wind-energy production project. Pickens sprung the news on an invite-only crowd in Pampa yesterday, where the billionaire oilman said his Mesa Group would be constructing a multi-billion-dollar wind farm across four counties in the Panhandle: Gray, Roberts, Hemphill and Wheeler counties.

"We looked at an area where we had water rights with real good wind, and it's just that simple,” said Mike Boswell, spokesman for the Mesa Group. Pickens said earlier this month that the price of oil will average close to $70 a barrel this year: "You'll not see oil below $50 again except for very short spikes," he told the Wall Street Journal. So, wind 'tis. --Robert Wilonsky
