Dallas' Other Congressional Gold Medalist

Categories: News
Dr. Norman Borlaug has a Congressional Gold Medal he can now hang around his bust.

Though he didn’t live to see it, golf legend Byron Nelson picked up a gold yesterday -- that is, a Congressional Gold Medal. But buried 20 paragraphs or so down in this DMN piece -- just after the Dalai Lama and the Tuskegee Airmen -- we see another Congressional Gold Medal recipient, Dr. Norman Borlaug. Borlaug, a Texas A&M agricultural scientist, Nobel laureate and Dallas resident (on paper, at least), is a father of the Green Revolution.

Borlaug was instrumental in developing disease-resistant and high-yielding strains of wheat, corn and rice through meticulous hybridization and breeding. The resulting “miracle seeds” are credited with saving millions and millions of people from starvation in the 1960s and 70s. The Congressional Gold Medal has other high-profile recipients, such as Nelson Mandela, track star Jesse Owens and Thomas Edison. Mother Teresa too -- good company, unless you take the missionary position. --Mark Stuertz
