Jim Schutze Responds to Alex Krieger's "Absurd" E-Mail to Unfair Park

When city council member Angela Hunt succeeded in getting copies of consultant Alex Krieger's e-mails to the mayor about the Trinity River toll road, we mere taxpayers succeeded in getting a glimpse of the truth. Krieger plainly told Mayor Laura Miller in his e-mail that the road he had helped design for the Trinity River Project had morphed into something more like an interstate highway and was not the "context sensitive design" he believed the project needed.

The unearthing of that e-mail made a liar of the Mayor. She had been insisting that the current plans for the toll road were the result of Krieger's "Balanced Vision Plan" for the river.

So Unfair Park publishes the e-mail and outs the mayor. Then the mayor gets on the horn and beats Krieger about the ears. Then Krieger, with a practice to defend as a paid consultant, ships Unfair Park his absurd e-mail, posted earlier this morning, in which he claims his original e-mail has been the victim of an "irresponsible twisting" by the Dallas Observer.

Sorry, Krieger.

The only irresponsible twisting going on here is whatever they did to your arm to make you write this malarkey and whatever you had to do to your spine bending over backwards to deny the clear meaning of your own words.

A few commenters here have suggested it was unladylike of Hunt to demand Krieger's e-mails to a city official. But this response from him shows why it had to be done. If it were not for the Public Information Act and Angela Hunt, we were never going to see the truth of this.

Professor Krieger obviously knows which side his bread is buttered on, and it is not the side of the public interest. --Jim Schutze

OMG, this is great! Keep it up, Jim! Keep digging, Angela!

South Dallas Voter says:

Jim, I agree with Ryly wholeheartedly. Keep up the good work. Same with you, Angela. Thanks for having the courage to stand up to Laura Miller and all her tricky maneuvering. This is clearly a case of Laura getting caught trying to gloss over some very important details.

Randy Mayeux says:

It appears to me that Jim's take on this is accurate. But in the midst of the back and forth, it is good to remember the starting point: in the original vote, we voted approval for a "parkway," and we are now asked to accept a "toll road." This is the essence of Councilwoman's Hunt argument, and it is one that I fully agree with.

So -- let's sign this petition and get it on the ballot for reconsideration. Then let Laura Miller and Ron Kirk make their case. So far, to me, Angela Hunt is the far more persuasive voice.

Laura'sALiar says:

The fact that Madame Mayor has taken time out of her busy day to twist arms, and respond to Jim Schutze at the little 'ol Dallas Observer is very telling about her guil over the whole issue. Keep reporting on this story Jim. . .we all know the Dallas "Managed" News refuses to.

Danny says:

Anytime an elected official tries to convince the public that voting on a particular project is the WRONG thing to do...that's when you know you panic is starting to set it. And panic is starting to set in because somebody - most likely in an unethical or disengenuous position - stands to make a lot of money from the project in question.

I've said it before once on here and the comments were deleted during The Great Unfair Park Upgrade. So I'm saying it again...

Who stands to make money from this project? Which companies are investing in (or soliciting for investments on behalf of) the various toll roads going up all over the place these days? Do those companies have any financial ties to any media outlets? (Say, the Belo Corporation, for example.) And have those media outlets been forthright with their reporting on the project(s) in question? Or do the stories they choose to report - and the manner in which they report them - betray the agenda of the incestuous corporate financial ties of all involved?

Are any of us surprised anymore when we find out companies with government connections (Halliburton/KBR, Blackwater, Bechtel, etc.) are awarded gigantic "rebuilding" contracts in areas like Iraq and Somalia that we just happen to be conveniently destroying? (Or "repairing" contracts in places like New Orleans that Mother Nature was kind enough to take out for us, for that matter...)

Don't think that kind of thing isn't happening at the state and local levels as well. If you get some time and feel curious, check out www.corridorwatch.org and search for "Goldman Sachs" or "Belo" or anything else you think might warrant some extra snooping. You may find some interesting info there or elsewhere online...

We all need to be taking our cues from the mythical line in "All The President's Men": FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Isn't the North Dallas Tollway called Dallas Parkway once you go north of 635? Hmmmm.

Darryl says:

I'd like to know why Bill Ceverha (Treasurer of Texans for a Republican Majority, the group created by Tom DeLay to help engineer a GOP takeover of the state legislature) is a big proponent of the Trinity Project.

When Angela Hunt kicked off the petition campaign on the banks of the Trinity River last month, Bill Ceverha was there giving his opposing view to TV reporters.

Who sent him there ? Who's bidding is he doing ? Is Ceverha just out looking for the best interests of the citizens of Dallas (I don't think he even lives in Dallas) or is he shilling for bigwigs who have a lot to gain financially by having a huge, ugly, polluting, high-speed tollway built ?
