Did You Hear the One About the Farmers Branch Mayor Pro Tem Invoking Rosa Parks' Name?

Tue May 15, 2007 at 02:58:19 PM
Say, Tim O'Hare, the ghost of Rosa Parks would like a word with you...

Lucky for you, dear Friends of Unfair Park, our early-rising blog editor caught Saturday’s 7 a.m. Today show, during which Farmers Branch city council member and deputy mayor pro tem Tim O’Hare -- a fervent proponent of the law mandating citizenship certification requirements for apartment-renters in that city -- sparred with Ordinance 2903 opponent Chris McGuire. In a long-winded and fervent oration, O’Hare invoked the names of historic black civil rights leaders -- to bolster his case for giving illegal immigrants the boot!

After the jump, a transcript from the broadcast, followed by a response from Casey Thomas, president of the Dallas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Needless to say, he is not amused.

CAMPBELL BROWN, Today anchor: Well, let me ask both of you to address this question if you believe it's not a municipal issue. The federal government, Congress has been trying to deal with this issue for quite some time now. They have had no success. Why shouldn't cities then take it upon themselves to try to solve the problem?

TIM O'HARE, Farmers Branch Deputy Mayor Pro Tem: Campbell, we have heard...from the opponents of this ordinance from day one that this is a federal issue, and my question to Chris and every other person that's against this ordinance, would you have told Rosa Parks that it's a federal issue and wait on the federal government? Would you have told Susan B. Anthony that it's a federal issue, wait on the federal government? Where would our country be today if Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks had waited on the federal government.

CHRIS McGUIRE, United Farmers Branch: Well, I think every one of those civil rights leaders would just come right back at you and say that, you know, using their names to promote a law that is discriminatory is just laughable, Tim.

The NAACP's Thomas told Unfair Park this afternoon this was the first time he'd heard an anti-illegal immigrant crusader invoke the names of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. to support the cause. After we read him the transcript, he said, “I believe he’s using that out of the context in which those individuals stood up for what they did. They were not a part of the establishment, part of the government, so they were speaking for people who were looked at as the outcasts, as opposed to people who were part of the establishment.”

Though O’Hare and his supporters claim they’re victims of an unchecked wave of illegals, for some reason, Thomas doesn’t think their complaints really compare to black citizens being barred from buses and schools drinking fountains and pools. Oh, and being lynched. Yeah. Really not the same thing.

Thomas also pointed out that the national NAACP office supports comprehensive immigration reform, which would include not just additional border enforcement but also a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants already in the country. He’s not a fan of the ordinance Farmers Branch passed on Saturday.

“To use the laws to force people out -- there’s a better way to go about accomplishing something than to create an ordinance and forcing people to leave,” he says. --Megan Feldman

Wow. The sheer force of that little bit of cognitive dissonance just knocked me out of my chair.

skeptic says:

Megan when will you present the other side? Why don't you talk to some people who are being negatively affected by say, the car repair shop being run next door in a home that to report would be racist.

Ayn Rand says:

Megan Feldman is not a journalist. She is a spokesperson for criminals.

The continuance of this situation undermines the credibility of the Dallas Observer.

dtc says:

please people, you cant tell me youre defending this ordinance out of recognizing and enforcing the law. you have simply dreamt up a legal statute and managed to get it to pass out of your own sheer xenophobia. it has nothing to do w/ illegals and the crime rate and whatnot, and everything to do w/ the fact that youre scared your daughter would one day bring a mexican immigrant home to meet you.

the real Texas says:

Actually Tim O'hare lacks the moral authority to speak about discriminating against a group of people as something that is less than honorable. His nonsense has been heard throughout history, just substitute jews, italians, poles, irish, blacks for everything he says about illegal aliens and you see the same gross racism disguished as state rights or keeping America for Americans.America got richer because of all these immigrants,I bet Mr.Ohare's grandfather or greatgrandfather would be ashamed of him today.

Tina Jones says:

Megan never presents the other side because she supports illegal immigration. How ironic that people call Mr. O'Hare a racist, and yet there were many hispanics on Saturday supporting the ordinance. Isn't it amazing how people can't argue the merits of an issue, so they suddenly blurt out that someone is a racist. Not only is that not original, but is shows pure stupidity.

mcat says:

I'll believe that Farmers Branch is serious about cracking down on illegal immigrants because of the law when they start cracking down on the business owners and individuals who hire the immigrants or the businesses who sell goods or provide services to immigrants. It's a classic case of these immigrants are good enough to cut your grass or serve you dinner or do other menial jobs for menial wages, they are good enough to spend money and pay sales taxes in your city, but they aren't good enough to live in your neighborhood.

dtc says:

i never once mentioned racism. you may very well have nothing against a particular race of people, but dont want your own culture and place where you live 'corrupted' by another. which is why i used the term xenophobia.

Tina Jones says:

With all due respect, MCAT, that was brought up before the City Council, but several members didn't want to deal with that. Now that there are two new council members, they have already said that on the agenda is to crack down on those who hire illegals. If you don't live in the city, be careful about making assumptions, since its obvious you don't have a pulse on what is going on in the city.

And actually I was referring to someone else's post which mentioned racism, but since you brought it up dtc: xenophobia is a "hatred of Foreigners" which is also a bogus argument considering there are many immigrants in Farmers Branch who support the ordinance. The ordinance has to do with illegals--not sure what part of that you don't understand.

iren says:

I am all for it! Finally Americans stood up for their country. No help from Federal Govrement , that means citizens have to do deal with illegal immigration. Salut to Farmers Branch!!!
