The Texas Rangers: By Disappointing, They Do Not Disappoint

Categories: Sports
Diamond in the rough: Formerly a Rangers pitching-prospect great, Thomas Diamond will now miss the entire 2007 season.

It wasn't so long ago that Thomas Diamond, Edinson Volquez and John Danks were going to be the one-two-three punch of the Texas Rangers' pitching rotation. They even had their own nickname: "DVD," which made them, sort of, "The Three J's" of the Rangers' rotation. Turns out, those fellas are as much as collective bust as Jim Jackson, Jamal Mashburn and Jason Kidd were during their brief stint with the Dallas Mavericks in the mid-1990s.

In December, the Rangers traded Danks -- the team's top draft pick four years back -- to the Chicago White Sox for 23-year-old right-hander Brandon McCarthy. (Danks is still hoping to make it to the majors with the Sox when the seasons starts in a couple of weeks.) Then, just a few days ago, Diamond and Volquez were shipped from Rangers' spring-training camp in Arizona to minor-league camp. Last week, the Startlegram figured the two would "likely be part of the starting rotation at Triple A Oklahoma this season."

Only, Jamey Newberg of The Newberg Report just sent word that "righthander Thomas Diamond will have Tommy John surgery tomorrow to repair a torn ligament in his elbow." Which means, naturally, he will miss the entire 2007 season.

That is so Rangers. --Robert Wilonsky
