Random AFI Dallas Tips, First in An Occasional Series

If you must choose one film to see at the inaugural AFI Dallas International Film Festival 2007, please, let me suggest King of Kong. I will have plenty more to say about the movie in Wednesday's paper version of Unfair Park, in which our AFI preview will appear, but trust me, it was a hit at South by Southwest, and it'll be a hit here. In short, it's about the world's greatest Donkey Kong player (Billy Mitchell, mulleted douchebag) and the kindly contender (Stevie Wiebe, frustrated failure) who aims to wrest the title from Billy's hands.

The movie screens Sunday and Monday at the Magnolia Theater, so before it sells out, trust me: Movie of the Fest, if not Movie of the Year. Thing's so awesome that come 2008, director Seth Gordon looks to have a fictionalized feature in theaters; you can say you knew it when it was nothing more than a 79-minute doc. Not kidding: I could have written 2,000 words just about King of Kong. And, since my AFI preview ain't quite done, I just might yet. --Robert Wilonsky
