INXS Had What a Local Real-Estate Money Man Needed

An old, old Friend of Unfair Park sends word that INXS played a private birthday party at the Granada Saturday night for Scott Kipp, a partner at the real-estate investment firm Cardinal Capital. Kipp and his missus were celebrating their 40th birthdays, which apparently fall a few weeks apart, and, for reasons that remain mysterious to those of us who can hear, the couple hired the retooled band to play the shindig. Ah, but we kid, of course. After all, somewhere in our collection is a copy of Shabooh Shoobah. Haven't played it in 25 years, but, still.

Then again, maybe the Kipps just felt bad for the band: INXS was dropped from Epic Records last year after 32 people, give or take, bought the band's first album in eight years, Switch, which featured hired-on-TV lead singer J.D. Fortune. We're not sure what it cost the Kipps -- had to have been in the high four figures, at least -- but for INXS, it had to have been a better gig than this week's stop at the Cache Creek Casino and Resort in Brooks, California, wherever that is. At least the couple didn't steal my idea: For my 40th birthday, or my kid's bar mitzvah in 2017, we're totally, like, hiring Adam and the Ants. --Robert Wilonsky

How many big bands do you think have played private parties for megabucks? How many very famous singers with top ten hits do you think have been enticed by big corporations to play their private parties? I suggest you google that Mr.Robert Wilonsky before you embarrass yourself with articles like this again. I believe even your politicians play private parties some for $1000/plate. So I guess, INXS is famous if they are one of the bands asked to play private parties. Who are you dreaming of inviting to play your next party. Just asking.

Just for the record, Michael Hutchence committed suicide..it would help if people would inform themselves first by reading the Official Coroner's Report. It's not good to report misinformation in regards to someone's passing.INXS is a completely different band now..they have the same name but there is a new lead singer and a new album..basically they are starting over fresh. In a world where so much energy is spent being negative..where the majority likes to cut people down to get their point across..wouldn't it be nice to extend some kindness once and while? These guys are extremely talented musicians..they are legends. When you hate someone..the fact is that you are still talking about them. This isn't the last that the world has heard from INXS..Peace and Love...X

Shabooh Shoobah still sounds great today. "Don't Change" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

You wanna hear another one... check out what happened to 10,000 Maniacs... www.maniacs.com.

This is probably where I tell everyone that Merritt purchased "Switch" with her own money. Actually, she burned it for me. Not half bad.

Is this where I tell everyone that Shabooh Shoobah was the first album I purchased with my own money? This was after my cousin got hitched to "Don't Change." They're divorced now. Is there a trend here or what?

(And by the way, by "my own money" I mean earned dollars unlike those found in birthday cards I may or may not have used in earlier years to procure such hits as Smurfing Sing-Song.)

Jeff, I guess this is the part of the comments section where I have to admit that I too was at that Adam Ant show at the Bronco Bowl. Though, alas, my date did not run off with some other guy till much, much later -- a New Year's Eve party, to be exact. So very proud.

Here's an interesting sidenote: in the mid-80's I took a first date to see INXS open up for Adam Ant at the Bronco Bowl. After the opening set, she quickly got up and said she needed to go to the rest room. Thirty minutes later she still had yet to return to her seat. Adam Ant began his set and I finally went to go look for her. Couldn't find Lisa anywhere. Went home alone and wondered what had happened to her.

A few days later she called from Down Under with the news that she was engaged to Jon, the drummer of INXS. They stayed married for six or seven years, then divorced when she admitted to cheating on him with the lead singer. Now she's a bigtime account exec in NYC and her sister still lives with Paul Quigg here in Dallas.

Wow. That was cold. Haha. I actually loved this band way back when. Sucks they are now playing such crappy gigs. Wonder if it has anything to do with them selling out to corporate tv? Or that the new singer used to be a lounge act. SAD. (sneers)

The guy singing is pretty lame Let's ask the bartender."Mr. Kip: "Hey man - what happened to the lead singer"Bartender: "The original guy died, man...in 97"Mrs. Kip: "What????
