Galaxy Club Owes A Bunch of People a Bunch of Money. Whoops.
Our old colleague Sam Machkovech is right: The Galaxy Club is -- for the moment, at least -- no mas. What you see at right is the seizure notice slapped on the club yesterday by Randy Brestrup, a local officer for the Office of the State Comptroller. Unfair Park has learned the club was seized because owner Kent Wyatt owes the state $12,500 in sales and mixed beverage taxes, according to R.J. DeSilva, spokesman for the Comptroller's Office in Austin.
"They have 20 days for the owner or operator to fulfill their tax obligation, and then they can get whatever assets they had seized back," he says. "If not, then we liquidate those assets to pay off the taxes."
But there's more: Today, Unfair Park has discovered (because we actually went over to the Commerce Street club) that someone working for landlord Don Blanton also taped to the front door a "lock out notice," which says Wyatt has violated the terms of his lease by, well, not paying rent -- though it doesn't say for how long he's been in non-compliance and how much he owes. The notice also warns that should someone -- even someone who runs the venue -- try to enter the building without permission, they'll be "considered trespassing."
One more interesting note: The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission's Web site says that the Galaxy's liquor license, which was granted March 22, 1993, is set to expire in 19 days. Looks like March 21 got here a little early. Developing, natch. And, yes, the phone is "temporarily disconnected." --Robert Wilonsky
