Did Someone Just Say "Amon"?

If you have plans to visit the Amon Carter Museum some time in the next few months, you'd best hurry: The place is shutting down May 21 and will remain shuttered for a good three months. The reason why: "Repairs on the building's fire suppression system," which is not a euphamism. The entire release received at UP HQ is after the jump. --Robert Wilonsky

Amon Carter Museum to Close for Repairs to Fire Suppression System

FORT WORTH, Texas—Amon Carter Museum Director Ron Tyler announced today that the museum will close to the public beginning May 21 for a period of approximately three months to undergo preventive maintenance and repairs on the building's fire suppression system. The museum will reopen for the special exhibitions Chimneys and Towers: Charles Demuth's Late Paintings of Lancaster and Accommodating Nature: The Photographs of Frank Gohlke.

"The museum's priority is always to the care of the collection, as well as our visitors, and we have determined that both the artwork and our guests are best protected by closing the museum for this period of repair," Tyler said. "The alternative would have been to close the galleries in stages over a much longer period of time, which would have required additional art handling and a much longer period of disruption for the visitor."

No traveling exhibitions or public programs were scheduled for this summer, so cancellations have not been necessary. The museum's internal operations will continue as usual.
