Whiskey River, Dosed With Acid

On February 10 at the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, Willie Nelson will be performing with the Fort Worth Symphony...and Jessica Simpson...and the Dallas Black Dance Theater. Oh, and Cirque du Soleil. Oh, yeah. And Kinky Friedman. Swear to God I had that very same dream last night.

It's all part of something called, rather artlessly, "An Artclectic Evening." Nonetheless, it's for a good cause: The event will raise dough-re-mi to "fund college scholarships for artistically gifted students in Dallas-Fort Worth," says the Associated Press this morning (in a story I can't find online). The event's being staged by The AetheriA Foundation, which, says here, "has established a fund at Communities Foundation of Texas, which will administer the $25,000 scholarships." (The whole foundation sounds kinda nutty: You have Ron Kirk on the advisory board...and Morgan Fairchild as chair of the "celebrity board." And the whole thing's co-sponsored by Texas Roadhouse. Yeah, got me.)

Anyway, tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster and Nokia. Prices start at $50, $65, $75 and $100. But, ya know, the chance to see Kinky Friedman and Jessica Simpson on the same stage as the Dallas Black Dance Theater seems kinda priceless to me. --Robert Wilonsky

Liles says:

OK, this is just wrong on way too many levels.

First of all, it isn't the "artistically gifted" students who need scholarships, it's the dumb ones like me. Second, did Jessica Simpson or Willie Nelson ever actually go to college themselves, or are they just doing this as a write-off? Third, I'm sure the Fort Worth Symphony is badass, but I'd really rather hear Willie's own band backing him up. Next, what is Kinky Friedman's relevance here? Name recognition as a loser? Finally, how do any of these acts find a common audience, especially at a hundred bucks a pop?

Just get Morgan Fairchild, Ron Kirk or the people from Texas Roadhouse to cut a fat check and spare everyone the indignity of these people playing to big empty room.

David says:

I guess complaining is what you do best, any organization that gives of their time and to kids should be applauded not criticized, but then critics wouldn't have a job if they didn't bitch about things, if anyone knows about acid I guess it would you.

Robert Wilonsky says:

Uh, David, I wasn't criticizing anyone. I was just pointing out how wacky the lineup is. That, and the Morgan Fairchild connection. And I did promote the thing, didn't I?

Passion says:

I think this event sounds badass! Dallas has been needing to do something different for a while now. There are so many killer events like this on the coasts and it's about time Dallas steps up to bat. National talent from the DFW area gathering for a cause other than disaster relief? FINALLY!
The arts in the metroplex are sadly overlooked and an artistic force such as this should be hailed not bashed.
I applaud the AetheriA Foundation for having some balls. In a world of ever-changing tastes and ADD minds - I think shows with variety are the way of the future.
Way to go...
