SMU Top Cop Going to Afghanistan. Not For Spring Break, Either.
This definitely doesn't count as a promotion: SMU's Daily Campus had a piece late last week about Michael Snellgrove, who, for the past four years, has been the university's police chief. (He's actually been with the SMUPD -- hunh, that looks funny -- since 1994.) Turns out, the next step after being SMU's Top Cop is...this can't be right...going to Afghanistan to train that country's police force. Says Snellgrove, "It's a very exciting career move for me." Which is probably putting it mildly.
Nonetheless, it does fit with his career goals, which is "to be a security consultant for a global wide security-consulting firm," he tells the student paper. Snellgrove does have some military experience, of course: After graduating Valdosta State University with a degree in criminal justice, he was a commanding officer in the Air Force's police unit. So, of course, we wish Snellgrove the best of luck. According to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice yesterday on ABC's This Week, he'll need it. Spring break? Not bloody likely. --Robert Wilonsky
