Ahoy There, Baby Gramps Ahead

Categories: Music

One of last year's most interesting music compilations was Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys, a double-disc compilation (dreamed up by Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski) that included performances by Nick Cave, Jolie Holland, Bono, Lucinda Williams and a host of other notables. It was little-known underground street musician Baby Gramps that led off the set, however, singing "Cape Cod Girls" backed by fellow folk weirdoes Akron/Family.

With a voice best described as a cross between Popeye and a didgeridoo (not to mention one helluva grey beard and a propensity to speak in palindromes), the aging folk singer was a natural choice to represent the album on the Late Show with David Letterman, an appearance that surely baffled much of Middle America. This Sunday, Baby Gramps washes up right here in Big D, where he'll take the stage at the Double Wide. He'll be joined by Denton's Warren Jackson Hearne and the Merrie Murdre of Gloomadeers, a fitting opener if there ever was one. For all ye landlubbers, here's a taste of what you're in for.
