Pimpin' Olympians

Categories: Sports
Olympic weightlifter Cheryl Haworth has been taking meals with ex-Tom Hicks partner Charles Tate. No word if Tate's actually on the menu.

Seems Tom Hicks ain't the only member of the Fab Four -- which is to say, the buyout artists formerly known as Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst -- with a thing for the sports.

The latest issue of Forbes , which is available by subscription only, features a story about how private citizens are bankrolling Olympians, since it's easier than, ya know, owning a crappy Major League Baseball team that can't land a big-name free agent pitcher or a frustrating National Hockey League franchise that gets bounced early in the playoffs. And you can do it without giving money to the United States Olympic Committee. That's where Charles Tate comes in.

Forbes reports that Tate has been giving much money to USA Weightlifting, based out of Colorado Springs, which is trying to raise $200,000 to cover coaching and travel expenses for its sojourn to Beijing next year. In fact, the mag says, Tate has given so much dough to USA Weightlifting that its exec director, two-time Olympian Wesley Barnett, "has arranged to have his team -- including two-time Olympic star weightlifter Cheryl Haworth -- dine more than once with Tate and his family." In related news, I gave Quincy Carter $8.53 to have brunch with me in a few weeks. --Robert Wilonsky
