Parcells: Not a Giant (Well, Not That Way)

Categories: Sports
Bill Parcells says he wasn't looking for a Giants job. Dang. We were so hopin'.

I once had a helping of Irate Tuna at a Japanese restaurant; little too pink and puffy for my tastes. But Irate Tuna's on the menu today in the New York Daily News, where the coach of the Dallas Cowboys vehemently denies yesterday's stories -- reported on NFL.com and in the Daily News -- that he had inquired about the New York Giants' general manager position. "There is absolutely nothing to it," Parcells tells writer Gary Myers. "Absolutely nothing. There has been no contact, either directly or through an intermediary. Whoever said it is a liar."

Actually, a few people said it to a few different people. Stories circulated that his son-in-law, New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli, declined an invites to interview for the Giants' gig because Paw-Paw Parcells was interested in going back to NYC. Then there was another report that Parcells had inquired about the gig, only to be told by the Giants, for whom Parcells had been head coach from 1983 to 1991, they weren't interested. "There is absolutely no truth to that report," Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon tells Myers. So, dang it. Maybe Parcells will still be the Cowboys' coach next season. Well, that sucks. --Robert Wilonsky
