A Peek Into the Future

Categories: Arts

On Friday, Dallas' Only Daily ran a piece about the new City Performance Hall -- known to some as "The Third Hall," since it ain't as fancy as its Dallas Center for the Performing Arts siblings, the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House and the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre. The version now online is short on photos, though, which is to say, there ain't a one. You're just supposed to imagine how the performance hall will fill the entire corner of Ross Avenue and Routh Street. Now, close your eyes...

Or, instead, head to city council member Angela Hunt's Web site; she's got plenty of pics on her blog, where she also insists that after fretting over the design, she's now quite cool with it. "The new design is awesome," she insists, "and will be enhanced by the right exterior materials." The building's gonna run more than $38 million when it's finished, house some 70 arts organizations, seat about 750 and open in, oh, 2010. And it was designed by an outta-town firm: Chicago's Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. --Robert Wilonsky
