Season's Sadness

Dallas sports legends don't get much bigger than Dallas Texans owner and American Football League founder Lamar Hunt.

Dallas sports icon Lamar Hunt is said to be in grave condition in a local hospital, his family desperately holding out for miracles at this point. In a year that's already seen us lose legendary Byron Nelson, losing Lamar would cap a tragic one-two punch.

Hunt, 74, was hospitalized at Thanksgiving with a collapsed lung, a by-product of his long battle against cancer. Lamar, owner of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs and FC Dallas soccer team and a minority owner of the NBA's Chicago Bulls, helped create the old American Football League back in the 1960s. His original franchise, the Dallas Texans, later became the Chiefs. The AFC Championship Trophy is named after him. The pitch at Pizza Hut should be named Lamar Hunt Field.

I have interviewed Hunt several times through the years, and I've never met a more congenial, caring person. Here's hoping I get to talk to him a few more times in the future. --Richie Whitt
