Queers and Steers

Categories: News

About a month ago we mentioned how suddenly there had been a rash of stories showing up about how the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau was out working hard to woo gay tourists. Well, you know who doesn't like that? (And, no, Bible Girl does not count as an answer.) The National Catholic Register, which, in its current issue, has a piece headlined: "Business Concerns Helping Homosexual Agenda." The story was written by some guy named Anthony Flott from Papillion, Nebraska. Sounds gay to me.

Of course, it's kinda hard to take seriously a story in which the first Voice of Reason is Cathie Adams, president of the locally based Texas Eagle Forum; these are the same folks who referred to hate crimes as "a manufactured 'crisis'" in 2001. Adams tells Flott that the city's attempts to go get itself some of that gay money "are among the reasons why traditional families are fleeing for the suburbs." Just don't tell that to all my gay friends tearing it up in Frisco. Adams also tells him: "As a Christian, I can say that when they supplant a fear of God and what he calls right and wrong with their god of dollar signs, it offends us morally as well as spiritually."

Me, I like Queerty's take on this: "If you get your way, Ms. Adams, it'll offend you financially, as well. But, we suppose missing out on millions of dollars in revenue's a small price to pay for being able to say, 'Steers, Not Queers' and mean it." --Robert Wilonsky
