A Dreamgirl's Potential Nightmare

Categories: Media

Jennifer Hudson's probably going to get an Oscar nomination for her performance in Dreamgirls. But not before the first-timer and former American Idol favorite has to deal with something she told the Dallas Voice last week, during her trip here to promote the big-screen version of the hit musical. Seems she told the newspaper that bills itself as "the community paper for gay & lesbian Dallas" that -- wait for it, wait for it -- "according to what we're taught, and what it says in the bible," homosexuality is "a sin."

The piece went up yesterday, and, as you might expect, the gay Interweb community has picked up on her comments.

This has to be the last thing Hudson ever thought she'd be dealing with as the movie's Christmas release date approaches; no doubt she was already prepping her acceptance speech. But, nope. Now she has to defend herself against charges that she's a homophobe. And her Dreamgirls co-star Eddie Murphy thought he had problems.

It's all certainly odd timing: After all, she's on the cover of The Advocate that's currently on newsstands, and she said during her interview with the magazine: "I think the world of the gay community, and I feel like it's an honor. The gay community is the hardest community to please, so if they love me, I must be fierce, honey." Nonetheless, the comments that appeared in the Voice prompted Hudson to post a response on her blog; fire, meet hose. She writes:

"In a recent interview, I was asked how I reconciled being a Christian with performing at events for my gay fans. I find it upsetting that some folks equate being a Christian with being intolerant of gay people. That may, unfortunately, be true for some, but it is not true for me...Yes, I was taught that the Bible has certain views on homosexuality. The Bible also teaches us not to judge. It teaches us to love one another as God loves us all. I love my sister, my two best friends and my director dearly. They happen to be gay. So what?"

Really need to fix her up with Bible Girl. Speaking of, she's coming up later todaytomorrow morning. --Robert Wilonsky
