Good to Be Badu

Categories: Local Music
Erykah Badu performs at a church on Saturday. For free. She's good like that.

We've said it before, but we'll say so again: If you didn't know any better, you'd swear Erykah Badu was still a hometown comer trying to make it in show business. She lives here, works here, owns a theater here, raises her kids here and pop up here and there; really shoulda said "hi" at the Target a few months back, come to think of it. Every now and then she'll turn up in something with a high national profile--oh, Dave Chappelle's Block Party or the recent VH1 Hip-Hop Honors broadcast--but more likely you'll find her at events like the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network's "Get Your Money Right" tour stop earlier this month at the University of North Texas, alongside Russell Simmons and Benjamin Chavis.

So here's the latest stop on her itinerary: the Friendship-West Baptist Church on Wheatland Road. She's scheduled to perform at the church this very weekend, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, as part of the the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial "Day of Giving" Program. Badu will headline a bill that will include other dancers and choirs and invited special guests; says on the press release sent to Unfair Park that the concert "culminates the DFW Faith-Based Campaign to raise funds to help build a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC to honor Dr. King." It also says the show's free and open to anyone, unlike, oh, tonight's Beck show at the Gypsy Tea Room, which cost $12 and is sold out. Speaking of, I may have an extra ticket... --Robert Wilonsky
