DMN Sends City Hall Reporter to, uh, Austin
Emily Ramshaw, who, for the last two years, has done a superior job covering city of Dallas business for The Dallas Morning News (even if Jim has the occasional issue with her work), will no longer be writing about City Hall. That's because she's heading south shortly after Thanksgiving to work in the paper's Austin bureau, which is still smarting from the loss of Pete Slover, who took the paper's buyout a couple of months back. ("I was not certain where journalism was going and if I wanted to be part of that," Slover told the Austin Chronicle in September.)
It's not clear who's going to replace Ramshaw--or if anyone will, as the position has not been made open to writers who might be interested in the job. And, c'mon, what bored, cagey vet or fresh-faced upstart wouldn't want that gig? Between the Calatrava bridges fiasco, the Trinity River "tweaks," the impending mayoral race and the what-the-hell-ever-happened-to-it FBI investigation, it's a reporter's goldmine over at Marilla. Which means, for now or maybe forever, it's all Dave Levinthal. Good thing the mayor's talking to him again.
Just occurs to me, though: This is how Belo shows its commitment to local journalism? By letting one of its best local writers move 200 miles away? And by not immediately naming a replacement? Awesome. --Robert Wilonsky
