Everyone's a Winner

Categories: Media

They gave away the Lone Star Emmys Saturday night in Houston, and in case you missed the results, KDFW-Channel 4 is, like, the best station ever. Or something. The local Fox affiliate picked up the night's top honor, Overall Station Excellence, which was presented to General Manager Kathy Saunders; KDFW picked up a total of 15 wins, which put it second only to the biggest winner of the evening, Belo's WFAA-Channel 8. Yup, despite the affiliate's dip in the ratings game with Channels 5 and 11 and the slip in quality (in a word: dolls), Channel 8 was still the biggest star at the Lone Star Emmys, which have been handed out the last four years by the Texas chapter of the National Television Academy. WFAA picked up 17 Emmys, including best the Best On-Air Talent awards for weather (Pete Delkus) and sports (Dale Hansen).

But pretty much every station nominated took home something; as the Houston Chronicle put it last night, the event "was a back-slapper in which winners were recognized in 105 categories, [and] in all, 24 Texas stations went home with at least one Emmy award." So KTVT-Channel 11 took home six Emmys (seems a tad low), KXAS-Channel 5 got only four (seems about right), and the local Telemundo affiliate, KXTX-Channel 39, snagged two. If it were up to me, I would have given KFWD-Channel 52 something for running The Rockford Files and the original Star Trek. --Robert Wilonsky
