The Coal Kids

Categories: News

Where was the mayor today? In Waco, d'uh, visiting with McLennan County Commissioners, who she wants to join her coalition of the willing to get rid of coal-fired plants that TXU and other energy companies want to build throughout the state. Mayor Laura and her Houston counterpart, Mayor Bill White, are like the Superman and Batman of the coal-fighting Super Friends; Waco could be, oh, the Aquaman, maybe. Membership in the club, called Texas Cities for Clean Air Coalition, costs $10,000, which goes to paying attorneys in Austin and Houston; I do believe you also get a nifty decoder ring and a poster of Mayor Laura wearing nothing but diamonds. ("The only way I like my coal," she's said; no?) According to this piece, McLennan County Commissioners took no action on the request, but tabled it for later consideration. Then they went to the Elite Circle Grill for some ribs. --Robert Wilonsky
