SMU Basketball! Live! In Austin?

The local Air America affiliate will carry coach Mike Doherty's SMU Mustangs this fall...Wait, Dallas has an Air America affiliate?

Wanna hear the first SMU basketball game of the Matt Doherty era? Wanna listen to Highland Park's football team defend its state championship? Then you better start tuning to the radio station that brings you Jerry Springer in the mornings, Al Franken in the afternoons and a format catering to Texas' jet set. What is essentially Air America Radio, but is being marketed in Dallas as "Texas Progressive Radio," KXEB-AM (910) is about to become a major player in local sports radio, especially among the most famous and fortunate of fans. The station, which already carries FC Dallas soccer games, will begin airing HP Scots football with the game against Bishop Lynch on September 15 and will broadcast Doherty's first game as Mustangs head hoops coach in early November.

KXEB--which is owned by BMP Radio, the nation's largest Hispanic-owned private network--is one of three Air America affiliates in Texas, along with KOKE-AM (1600) in Austin and KTXX-FM (103.1) in San Antonio. Since SMU is the network's crown jewel, you can hear the Mustangs this season on all three stations, spanning the Red River down to the Rio Grande. "Our listeners are loyal, have a higher degree of education, and are 72 percent more likely to make $75,000 a year than other talk formats," says KXEB's program director, Tony Migura. "There is not another radio station in Texas that has our reach and our passion." Also in the works, tentatively set for a September 9 debut, is a Saturday 5-7 p.m. sports-talk show live from the Wild About Harry's hot dog emporium on Knox Street.

And here's a tip: If you can't get KXEB to come in clearly, just lean a little more to the left. --Richie Whitt
