How About a Unicorn While You're at It?

Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez is asking the Dallas County Commissioners Court to pay for 784 new positions at a cost of $34 million. This comes one year after receiving close to 70 new jailers from the notoriously stingy county commissioners. While it's not uncommon for county department heads to ask for more positions than they know they'll receive, Valdez is not likely to gain anywhere close to what she is asking. The county's budget office has already recommended against most of her budget proposal, and the Republican-dominated county commissioners are not likely to be any more generous. --Matt Pulle
