Show Up, Friday 7/28 and Saturday 7/29

Friday: College kids would be wise to haul ass to Denton tonight, where DJ extraordinaire Diplo and Brazilian electro-popsters Cansei de Ser Sexy touch down at Hailey's, while jangly, out-of-town indie combo the Minders and the Kingdom play at Rubber Gloves just a few blocks away. Closer to home, this week's music section previewed a few gigs already, but my picks are Austin's Golden Bear at the Cavern--just listen to their songs, please--and the monthly hip-hop showcase, Final Friday, at the Gypsy Tea Room. But if you're too broke to afford cover at either of those, the Deathray Davies and Austin's Lemurs hold court for free at the Barley House.

Saturday: The fresh brilliance of Dallas' Rose County Fair headlines at Club Dada, but John Pedigo's latest (and greatest) take on alt-country has serious competition from the old guard. The Drams, celebrated in this week's main music feature and blog-hyped by Wilonsky a few days ago, hold their Dallas CD release party at Sons of Hermann Hall with help from the Deathray Davies (busy guys). On the (somewhat) other side of town, former Fry Street Fair organizer and artist-about-town Cabe Booth throws his 36th birthday party at the Cavern. Well, he should call it his 26th, considering the late '90s local greats on the bill: Baboon, Bobgoblin and the Dutch Treats, all of which are still going strong.

...and a bonus tip for any Austin readers: Fort Worth's Theater Fire performs at the inside stage at Emo's tonight, supported by Austin up-and-comers Pink Nasty and Brothers & Sisters. You really need to go to this show and see what we up here have been raving about. -Sam Machkovech
