Get on the Bus

Categories: News
Here's some good news for Dallas Area Rapid Transit: Late yesterday, the American Public Transportation Association released a report in which it showed that public transportation ridership in the United States grew by 4.25 percent in the first quarter of 2006. According to the study, Americans hopped a ride on public transportation--meaning everything from bus to light rail to ferry boat to trolley bus--some 2.5 billion times during the first three months of the year. And Dallas is among the cities with the largest leap in usage; in fact, DART's way above the national average, showing a double-digit jump among those riding the bus (9.4 million to 10.7 million, which is a 13.74 percent increase) and a similiar spike in the number of people taking the light rail (523,000 to 581,000, a 10.9 percent jump). So what accounts for this? Says APTA President William Millar in a press release: "The high price of gas, coupled with expanded transit service, has made public transportation attractive to a growing number of Americans in small and large communities across the country." In all, 209,500 use DART every day. I ain't one of 'em. You? --Robert Wilonsky
