W: Not Weally That Big a Wait
Yesterday, in previewing the W Hotel's latest digs in Victory Park, I mentioned how the hotel's construction was taking a little longer than expected, forcing Starwood to push back the June 15 opening. Turns out the wait won't be that long: Last night, folks at the hotel confirmed that they're now scheduled to open on June 21st, which is just six days after the W's our original opening date. And the grand-opening wowza-wowza is still supposed to take place June 29th. That gives me a few more days to raise the small fortune I need for the Mega-Texas Presidential Suite.
And in other nearby hotel news, Doubletree Hotels announced this morning "the debut of the Doubletree Hotel Dallas Market Center," which is essentially a $2 million redo of an existing hotel that hasn't had anything done to it in a decade--which ain't gonna work for a hotel on Stemmons Freeway, not with the fancy-pants W and Mandarin Oriental moving in down the street. It's supposed get "luxurious new beds," "refreshed public areas" and the "rejuvenating" of the hotel's 228 guest rooms. Sorry, but unless you got a Ghostbar, you just got a Doubletree. --Robert Wilonsky
