Cowboys in Third Place!

Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach's Hall of Fame Racing team finally broke through on the NASCAR circuit yesterday. Wonder how Quincy Carter's racing team's doing.

On the football field, that would be disastrous news. But on the NASCAR track, it's a breath of better-late-than-never air. Giving hope to what has been a predictably bleak rookie season, the Hall of Fame Racing team owned by former Cowboys quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach got its best result of the year Sunday when driver Terry Labonte finished third at something called the Sonoma or the Infineon or something. The win earned the team $155,825, but more important, of course, it let the novices know they are at least on the right track to competing with the sport's big boys.

Then again, who really cares? Aikman summed it up best, re-loading our guns that have long been trained on the NASCAR-isn't-a-sport target. "Generally in other sports, you kind of dictate your future," Aikman said last week. "Whereas this, you're also relying on some mechanical things that don't always operate the way you're supposed to." This concludes any and all blog items regarding NASCAR for the calendar year 2006. We now resume coverage of real sports. --Richie Whitt
