Action Jackson
The Dallas Business Journal's May 5 story about U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson's April 28 speech in Dallas is turning into one hell of a piece. Turns out Jackson's "admirable candor" regarding how he'll cancel a government contract with anyone with an unkind word about George Dubya may get him into a little trouble. Or a lot. Says here that the self-admitted behavior of the former president and CEO of the Dallas Housing Authority may not be, ya know, legal, as it could be a violation of several government laws.
The Democratic National Committee's sending out releases calling this just "another example of the Republican culture of corruption," every paper in the country's all over this thing, and it could get even bigger: Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) demanded the president fire Jackson if the DBJ story proves true, while Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Barney Frank (D-MA) have demanded a full investigation into his actions. Oddly, Jackson's people claim he made the whole story up. So...he's a liar? Wow, that is one amazing defense. --Robert Wilonsky
