Potok It Up

Categories: News

The listener-supported, commercial-free radio station WPKN-FM, based out of Bridgeport, Connecticut, produces a weekly public-affairs show called Between the Lines; it's lefty of the dial, as it were, and good stuff. This week, the show featured an interview with Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center--and a former colleague of mine at the Dallas Times Herald waaaaaaay back when. Potok had some provocative things to say about some of the anti-immigration folks who organize and participate in marches like the one that took place last Saturday at the intersection of Walnut Hill Lane and North Central Expressway. He insists that among their ranks are "unrobed Klansman...a scary mix of mainstream immigration restrictionists and Klansmen and neo-Nazis." He insisted he does not "mean to sugest all anti-immigration groups are secret Nazis...but a lot of their leadership does have that kind of relationship." Oooh, boy. The SPLC has just published a lengthy profile of some 21 anti-immigration activists across the country, and it should be noted that none are from Dallas or Texas. --Robert Wilonsky
