America's (Broadcast) Team

Categories: Sports

With the re-signing of legendary play-by-play voice Brad Sham and sideline reporter Kristi Scales, we all assumed the return of Dallas Cowboys' radio color commentator Babe Laufenberg was a slam dunk. We were wrong. Next season the Cowboys will have a new radio home on KTCK-AM (1310, The Ticket) and a new Sham sidekick. Laufenberg, the current KTVT-Channel 11 sports anchor and former Troy Aikman backup, had played Robin to Sham's Batman since 1998. But, unlike Sham and Scales, he wasn't prepared to accept less money for doing the same job. But with Babe out, who's in?

A Valley Ranch Deep Throat tells me The Ticket has toyed with the idea of submitting broadcast icon Norm Hitzges for the Cowboys' approval. But, for now, former Pro Bowl safety Charlie Waters appears to be at the head of the line for the gig. It makes sense: For the past 11 seasons, Waters has worked on the team's pre-game shows as an analyst, and he was both entertaining and enlightening. Stay tuned... --Richie Whitt
