Oh, Norah

Categories: Music

When is the new Norah Jones CD not the new Norah Jones CD? When it's credited to The Little Willies, a band consisting of Jones on vocals and piano (duh), Richard Julian offering remarkably Lyle Lovett-like vocals and guitar, Lee Alexander on bass, Jim Campilongo on electric guitar and Dan Rieser on drums. These laid-back sessions--which consist primarily of covers originally performed by the likes of Bob Willis, Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt and Kris Kristofferson, the latter of whom will be inducted in the Texas Film Hall of Fame in Austin on Friday--sprang from the gang's regular stint at the Living Room, a cozy venue on the Lower East Side of New York City. The disc's as relaxed as a Sunday afternoon spent sippin' Shiner; if Jones' first two discs hinted at her country fetish, this self-titled project growls it on such songs as "Nightlife," "Roly Poly" and the hee-larious "Lou Reed," which imagines the Velvet Underground frontman tippin' cows beneath the East Texas moonlight. The disc's out today, but if you're skeptical or just too cheap to hear the latest project from the gal who used to play for tips at Popolo's in Preston Royal, the entire disc (sans the two bonus tracks available at iTunes) is streaming here for nuthin'. --Robert Wilonsky
