​Something I thought I'd never write in 2011: Todd Dodge is the new quarterbacks coach at Pitt.

By now I figured Dodge -- who ascended from historic success at Southlake Carroll High School to a gig at North Texas -- would be choosing from primo Division I jobs in the wake of multiple Sun Belt Conference championships and bowl appearances.

His innovative offense would befuddle college opponents just as it did high school defenses and off he'd go ...

Gulp.

After going 79-1 and winning four state championships in his last five years at SLC, Dodge flopped in Denton. At UNT he went 6-37 and authored some of the worst defenses in the history of college football.

​While SMU and disappointing head coach Matt Doherty look for their first Conference USA tournament win tonight at 8:30, the Metroplex last night was assured of a dog in the hunt during next week's March Madness when the University of North Texas captured the Sun Belt Championship.

Saw the second half of this game and UNT has some real players. Tiny point guard Josh White's lane jumper sealed the 66-63 victory over Troy and George Odufuwa's block applied the exclamation point. Eric Tramiel, the team's only senior starter, led UNT with 20 points and was named the tournament's MVP.

Which all adds up to ... a humbling loss in next week's first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Didn’t see this coming. You?

When high-school coaching legend Todd Dodge took the job at North Texas back in December ’06 I predicted great things. Great, instant gratification-type things.

Yikes.

Never did I envision Dodge overseeing a porous defense of record-setting proportions, a 2-18 record after 20 games, an all-time worst 0-8 start this season, and a program in which 18 percent of the players fail drug tests.

Turns out Southlake Carroll and UNT are vastly different shades of green.
