From Penn State to the Dallas Stars, the Good, Bad and Godawful News in This Day in Sports

Don't think for a second this small attempt to resurrect a sports blog is an afterthought. We'll get there ... sooner than later. But on a day like today: Where to begin? Penn State, no doubt, far from home for most but not for all, and certain top of mind on this day as news comes of riots breaking out over Joe Paterno's firing. "The media is responsible for JoePa going down," says a freshman. Right -- not, say, Jerry Sandusky.

But there is brighter news: The Dallas Stars sale has been moved up to a week from tomorrow, as Tom Gaglardi is the lone bidder for the bankrupt, best-in-the-NHL franchise. Reports Brandon Worley, all things go according to plan, Your Dallas Stars will be in new hands some time in December. Happy Christmas.

By that time, though, Mike Maddux may be the new Chicago Cubs manager. Hate to see the Rangers' pitching coach go; he was, after all, no Tom House. As he tells ESPN, there's much to consider before he packs his bags again:
"We have a lot of things to think about and a lot of things to weigh," Maddux said. "Family is very important. I played for a long time and when I finished playing my kids were 10 years old and 8 years old. I said what happened? So I got into coaching right away, and we moved the family to Wisconsin. At least we were together.

"Then I went to Texas. For the first two years my wife and youngest daughter stayed in Wisconsin. My oldest daughter was with me in college in Texas. As of June my family resides together. That had not happened in three years, and that's pretty special. There does come a time when you have to stop and smell the roses. There are a lot of tough decisions that would have to be made."
Then, finally, this just arrived in the inbox: an infographic showing the real loses resulting from the NBA lockout -- everyone from small-market teams to shoe manufacturers to cities losing millions in sales tax revenue from drinks and meals not sold.

Captain Douche's new blog at CBS Radio sucks ass just like The Fail. You can't post anything even remotely negative without it being flagged and deleted. I am glad this place is back with its open and honest community. The writing has improved greatly since the egomaniac with a napolean complex and hairplugs was fired. I say bravo DO, bravo.

I am over whelmed with admiration that every single newspaper reporter and talking sports head  knows exactly what they would have done if they were McReary or Paterno. I mean think about it, you are an unpaid grunt, on the lowest end of the totem pole, and you see your boss doing some despicable act.  You would just bust in there and break it up RIGHT? Your entire future is on the line, you are disgusted and overwhelmed with emotion.  What do you do?He chose to tell the top boss that he dealt with, Paterno. Now you are JoePa.  Your bst friend of 32 years has just been accused of a heinous crime, what do you do? According to all the pundits you go to the police.  But wait. Pennsylvania has no law requiring that.  What to do? What to do? You go to your boss.  You tell him what you think you know (remember what you know is hearsay).  Then later they tell you that everything has been "take care of".Now ten years later this doesn't just bite you in the ass it beheads you and buries 66 years of work. I'm not really defending anybody here, I'm just asking: What would you have done?

Think about it.

Stars - I'm a season ticket holder.  Attendance has been pathetic.  Seriously.  You can hear crickets chirping in AA Center.

Sadly, tonight the Stars played the hated Red Wings.  I went to 3 sports bars tonight before I could find ONE willing to show the game.

Yes, I realize I'm one of like, 5 people in this town who still care.

See, I knew starting this back up would be a bad idea: I got swamped today, had to go to the kiddo's school to read, then had 293 different things to deal with. I'll make it up to ya, swear. Maybe a weekender ender? I mean, Merten woulda done it, but he got wrangled into doing some thing with the guy who wrote Christine at the Majestic last night.

I love the fact that CBS is making whitt look like a tool.  no one can comment on his blog as the moderators eat up anything that is negative or dirty.  That place is a joke....I kind of feel bad, we all had so much fun.  Oh well the bits can continue here, at least we are respected and wanted and not trashed by our leader here

As I'm sure you're aware, that mindless midget who used to clutter up this space is continuing to use the name "Sportatorium" for his drivel. I hope you guys yank the rug right out from under his hair-pluged, P-90X'd, douched-out back bottom, and do it soon.

Nice infographic, but is ABC really getting "up to $400 million" for "a 30-second ad spot during the NBA Finals"? My money is on "no".And how can Memphis lose $223 million over the course of one NBA season? That assumes a direct economic impact of over $5.4 million per home game. The FeEx Forum only seats 18,119 for basketball so, assuming a sold-out 41-game home schedule, that's $300 person at every game. (In reality, the team averaged 14,268 per game in 2011 and 14,485 per game in 2010--among the worst in the NBA. At those figures, that's about $380 per person per game.)

I have a feeling that the PSU story is going to get much bigger and more sordid by the week.  I don't think all the players in the story/coverup have been announced yet and soon it will become clear that this coverup is even more widespread than previously announced.  I would not be surprised one bit, if the good old Death penalty was brought out of storage for this thing.

Think about it, go back to 1998..Sandusky is taped by police admitting molestation to the boy's Mom.  Right there is where it should've ended, Why did it not?

Dallas Stars: I really wish I could give a crap, just don't..but you make believe Star's Fans should be over there every night..shoot fire boys, 1st place in all of Hockey? and ya'll are sitting on your hands.

NBA and Dallas Mavs in particular: I miss you Dirk, Jet, Kidd, Tyson..Matrix..JJ (wonder if he re-signs?) I even miss Cube's fuunny haircuts and Coach lookingg like he's sucking on a lemon all the time.  Hurry the eff up Stern, sign a freaking deal and get my little running Mavs back the hell out there to defend their Championship.  Hell, I saw a commercial on Direct last night begging for my hundred bucks to watch a shit load of college hoops..and I'm thinking about it.

I don't want to think about the Redshoes without Maddux, he's a big huge ass part of this thing..he's one of the top five most important non playermen in the organization.

Robert, perhaps a little Wilonsky's End manana?  I know me and the boys are amped up about thiis thing having the power turned back on, many thanks sir.

sucks that my hometown Spurs are losing that much money. I don't really know which side to take on this, but hopefully they fix this shit so we're not doing it again in 10 years.

Maddux leaving this thing would be devastating.

Stars. Meh. Best record now, they'll be out of the running come playoff time.

You consider the fact that JoePa has kids and grandkids, and if he thinks it would be ok for Sandusky to do that to them. Is he ok with it? Ok, then he doesn't say anything. Would he have a problem with it? Obviously, so you make sure it gets taken care of.

Some people do blow the whistle. Some folks do report their bosses. Do you really expect someone to come out in praise of covering it up? That is what was done in this case from the very beginning. There are moral challenges in this life to be faced,  the spectrum of events that determine the quality of our character. Turning a blind eye to some venal sins is done every day. It is not in the same league of callous disregard in this case. Yes, this series of alleged events is more than enough to utterly destroy any credibility that Joe Paterno may have enjoyed previously. That he knew and did the barest minimum required by law is not enough to salvage his position or his legacy.

I am one of the other 5. It is tougher to drag my ass to Big D than it is Arlington, but I will manage to be up there in the cheap seats too.

Started to reference that on Bob's first post..but figured I didn't want to give the midget any credit. Went over there on the first day, and haven't been back..looked like the same give-up he was posting here.

The Sportatorium was a Dallas venue, so I don't think the Observer can claim any rights to the name either.

It's rather pathetic of him to do that, but I also stalk him. According to him.

Gotta agree with you on the Stars.  I am a huge Stars P1 but I am employing a wait and see attitude on this thing.  If we get to March and this thing is still solidly in the top 8,  I will get super excited.  Until then, I am just enjoying the fact that this team I thought was going to be a big sack of dogshit seems to have a little something.

dude the cheap seat can be had downstairs this year.  Stub hub is your friend, seen seats on the end halfway up lower bowl for less the $50 a ticket

My Unfair contributions are as hit-or-miss as an Occupy Dallas representative's logic.

And City of Ate just isn't the same to rail in, even though I was a contentious ass there the past couple days.

To conserve another post in the name of being green, thank you kindly, Mr. 10th Most Powerful Man in Dallas! Love ya! Merten is my first love though.

Can we get a banner Roberto, seems like a small request? "TWIS, by the people for the people." or some such? (this week in sports) Let me know and then I'll begin leading the blind.

Thanks for everything Bob, we very much appreciate the forum.
