Time For Y'all to Admit It: C.J. Wilson is a Bona Fide Ace

Categories: Texas Rangers

C.J. Wilson - Card.jpg
No doubt Kenny Rogers is the Rangers' best all-time left-handed pitcher. But is C.J. Wilson already No. 2?

He further helped his cause Tuesday night in Tampa, somehow resisting his stupid, "instinctive" urge to bare-hand comebackers long enough to shut out the Rays in a complete-game, 8-0 victory. Combined with Felix Hernandez' snuffing of the Angels, the Rangers' lead in the AL West grows to 3.5 games and their magic numbers plummets to 17.

I was saying a year ago that C.J. deserved to start Game 1 of the playoffs, yes even over Cliff Lee. I won't say he's having the kind of year that Lee is having in Philly -- 200 strikeouts and 6 shutouts, hasn't been done since '82 -- but certainly we now trust Wilson as a bona fide ace that will lead the Rangers into the playoffs and who must be signed in the off-season.

Right?

To me, Wilson has already leap-frogged guys like Jon Matlack and Darren Oliver on Texas' all-time lefty list, behind only Rogers and his franchise second-best 133 wins. He's now 15-6 in 30 starts and 200+ innings with an ERA of 3.13. This, of course, on the heels of 2010 when he went 15-8 with a 3.35. That's 30 wins in two seasons with an ERA of 3.24.

In the AL currently, there aren't a lot of pitchers I'd rather have starting Game 1 of next month's ALDS:

Justin Verlander. CC Sabathia. Jered Weaver. Jon Lester. Felix Hernandez. Josh Beckett. Maybe James Shields? And then C.J. Wilson. He's a Top 15 pitcher in baseball, one of the handful of the best in the AL.

To me that makes him an ace. And a very underappreciated one.

CJ is so gone after this season. He wants to be more of a celebrity/higher profile player. He isnt going to get that in Arlington. That pretty much means New York, Boston, or The Angels since the Dodgers can't afford him and the Cubs are irrelevant.

Time for us to admit it? Ok, as long as you admit you steal Ticket bits incessantly, have ridiculous looking hair-plugs, piss-poor RAGE ratings, and an earring (albeit in your late 40's) to boot.Deal?

Useless Facts:Top two all time lefty home runs allowed leaders were Rangers : Moyer, TananaOnly two all time home runs allowed leaders in the top nine that are not in the hall of fame were Rangers : Moyer, Tanana.Four of top eight all time home runs allowed leaders were Rangers : Moyer, Jenkins, Tanana, Blyleven.--------Ervin Santana gave up zero earned runs in last night's Angels loss. All Mariner runs came off errors by Santana, Callaspo and Aybar. The Angels had 4 errors for the night. Must really suck to be in a pennant race and lose an otherwise shutout performance because you can't make the plays defensively.

I won't admit it, b/c I just don't think its true. He can be a very good pitcher, but a bona fide ace? I'm not going to go there. We do however need to do whatever it takes to sign him b/c we need him. Nobody else wants to come here and pitch in the heat and CJ does well in it.

I am really not in the opinion that CJ will be in Socal next season. Who is going to sign him? The Padres and Dodgers can't afford him and the Angels have solid pitching already. I think they are going to try and get hitting this winter, not more pitching. If he does leave, which I don't think he will, I fear he will go to New York. They missed out on CLee last year and they may make sure they don't lose out on this one. We will see.

If we let our ace leave town in consecutive seasons, then the Sturminator debate of "is a fern a better GM than Jon Daniels" can re-commence.  Pay the man what he wants and keep him in town.

And I would've been on board with Ceej starting game 1 of the playoffs last year, just an attaboy for a homegrown talent.  Just like Scooter Feldman started opening day last year for his performance the year prior.

You have been saying it all along huh RW???????? Really??? Get over your self dude. Your an idiot if you think Cj should start over Cliff Lee in the playoffs. Here's a news flash Cj will not be a Ranger next year. He wants to play in SoCal. I don't think any amount of money will keep him in Texas.

Sad news this morning about the plane crash in Russia. My condolences go out to the teams family members and friends. Very sad............

Time for Y'all to admit it my arse, I've been saying it since before last season even started.  Look it up.  He will also be paid like one this off season, in years and total monies.  Too bad, it won't be by us.  Stay hard Ceej, and do what Clee couldn't do...Finish!

He gave up 7 hits though and 2 runs were attributed to him. One of the errors was his, I think that's why he got the hook for at least a run? I didn't watch the game, I was just looking at the box score. King Felix went 8 innings and gave up a run, I give him bigger props than Santana for going 6, but those guys are pretty even otherwise in terms of ERA.

Anyhow, a Halo's loss and a Rangers win is all I care about. Andrus and Aybar are pretty even on being error-prone, but Aybar has 12 for the year to Elvis' 20 something. Give me our infield and the Angels outfield defensively. Offensively, give me the Rangers all day baby.

TRDP1 and I discussed this a couple of weeks ago..winds are blowing towards the Yanks or Bosox..methinks.  Ceej would love to be on the biggest of stages, as much as he would love to be able to swing the bat.  Either way, I don't see him returning...Big Fish in a big pond is the path he's most likely to take.

I'm hoping he pulls a Jared Weaver and gives the Rangers a home town discount. But regardless, Nolan can't let another one of our top pitchers walk. I will go to the Temple and put him in a headlock and make him my Ventura.

I think the Angels trade Haren in the winter and sign Cj. Just a thought.

We're not getting a hometown discount brotha. If he stays, he'll be the highest paid Ranger on the roster. I don't see him as a Yankee, more of a west coaster. Hopefully we don't lose him outright, even if he goes to the Angels maybe we can get Haren in return, if we're lucky. Something is better than nothing. I hate to learn a lesson about losing #1 starter 2 years in a row. I don't know the numbers, but when was the last #1 starter to pull consecutive seasons? Millwood?

Haren is a free agent at the end of this season, so they will be needing a starter.
