The Curious Case of Alexi Ogando

Alexi Ogando - Blue.jpg
I know it's dangerous to knee-jerk in baseball, but suddenly Rangers' pitcher Alexi Ogando is disappearing faster than Benjamin Button. And from what we've seen the last two night I'd lean more toward giving the ball to Scott Feldman than the team's early-season ace.

Thanks to the lowly Mariners' late rally to beat the Angels, the Rangers' lead remains at 3.5 and their magic numbers had shrunk to 23. No thanks to Ogando, who dug his team an early  hole for the second consecutive start.

While James Shields dominated the 4-1 Rays' win by getting the Rangers to consistently swing at nasty stuff in the dirt, Ogando looked early on to have re-discovered "it." Notsamuch. After striking out three of the first four batter and retiring Johnny Damon on a harmless tapper, it got real ugly real fast.

Ogando lost his control, walking two and hitting another before not making it out of the 3rd inning. Manager Ron Washington was forced to use his bullpen, which included a stint by usual fifth starter Matt Harrison.

Once upon a time Ogando was 7-0. But he might have just hit the wall. He's at 150 innings, twice as many as threw last season. The results? He's been rocked by the Red Sox and Rays his last two starts and in August he's ERA ballooned from 2.88 to 3.68.

Right now I'd rather have Scott Feldman's sinker than Ogando's stinker.

In other pitching news, thumbs up to Mark Hamburger's scoreless-inning debut and another thumbs down to Koji Uehara, who allowed yet another homer -- to Damon -- and has now surrendered a run in four of his last five starts.

Tonight the Rangers get back Adrian Beltre. They could use the return of Ogando.

I'm confused by Wash's use of Harrison yesterday. Wasn't the idea to get him rest? Now when will we see Matt's next start?

Hated to see Koji give up another run, but I still have hope that he will come around.

Ogando? Just skip his next start. I think he will be fine. If not, he could still end up being a valuable part of the bullpen for an inning or two at a time.

The Rangers offense has averaged less than 4 runs a game over their last 13 games. Hopefully Adrian Beltre can get back in a groove quickly.

Didn't we already have this conversation? Everyone was ready to jump of the ledge when AO had a few shaky (if not horrible) starts in the middle of the season. Gotta agree with Dave on this one. He's hit a rough patch. I feel confident he'll find it again, I think Scooter takes his next turn and essentially gives Ogando 2 weeks off since what he did last night amounts to little more than a vigorous bullpen session. Just 1 of 162 my friends...

Nice shot of Ogando utilizing the circle change.

I dont think its curious, though I hear you are bi-curious mr. earring boy.

Fatigue, nothing more, give Feldy his spot start for Ogando and all will be fine.

That's ma'am to you mother fucker.  What a puss, you've now dropped to lowest of low for commenters, bagging on spelling and punctuation.  I'm not a professional writer and don't aspire to be either.  I really just want a piece of Sybils Beaver

You're a dude. Just find it funny that you took a jab at Richie and finish it with toodles. It's like seeing Manny Pacquiao KO a boxer and prance back to his corner.

Thanks for reading the comments on yesterdays Rangers post RW.

One problem with young pitchers is that when they get out of their groove, they don't know how to get back in it.

To this former pitcher's eye, it really looked like Ogando was rushing his release.  When he threw his sliders, he looked better than when he threw his fastball.  He might be over-gripping the ball, too.

Trust our pitching coach here. Maddox will get Ogando back in shape.

I guess Barnett and TAG didn't get on here and read your comment yesterday. The booth cougher was back with full force last night.

I think they have Babe and Bill Jones in the booth. It sucks as you would imagine.

Then toss in Spagnola doing his Siragusa imitation. It's essentially an infomercial.

Indeed I noticed. You'd think someone besides me would've noticed too, since I don't think it's Dave or Tom doing it. It is fitting in the overall minor league feel of a Rangers presentation this season, but that still beats the garbage CBS will throw on-air tonight from Miami.

I haven't watched any of the games that CBS 11 has aired...who is in their booth?

"and has now surrendered a run in four of his last five starts."  Not a grammar mistake, but rather a factual mistake since Uehara is not a starter.

Great baseball point RW, I agree.. lets run Feldman out there every night. Ogs will be fine, the three younguns in the rotation are all over their career highs in innings..everything will be ok, it's a long season ladies. As the real sports radio station suggested yesterday, I would expect to see Feldman take Ogs next start..and maybe Colby's start after that one. We're gonna get the younguns some rest, and hopefully Feldman can do what he do and what he did the other night..when he gets an opportunity.I found it interesting that JD said that he isn't planning on skipping any Dutch Oven starts..

Are you sure? I'm hearing that Ceej is starting tonight. Isn't this supposed to be Holland's start?

I wonder if that is to keep Ceej on his normal rest..I wasn't pulling a RW, JD did say they weren't planning on limiting Dutchoven's innings.

I have faith in this dude. He's a #4 in a #3 spot. Shouldn't we be more alarmed about the offense? They're scored 3 runs in the last two games after scoring 24 in the previous three games. I can live with Ogando giving up 3 runs, can you?

Great pitching beats good offense..and how good is our offense when Beltre and Boomstick isn't a part of it?  (Take a look at my SFBL entries last week for that answer, but still in third..and within striking distance.)

I can't believe you aren't blaming his slump on that paternity leave he took a month ago.
