Thanks to Baylor's Cock-Block, Texas A&M May Wait Until 2013 to Join SEC

The Southern Baptist Convention has over 16 million members. It also boasts a mission statement:

As a convention of churches, our missional vision is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every person in the world and to make disciples of all the nations.

Perusing their web site this morning I didn't read anything about cock-blocking, but SBC-backed Baylor is pulling off one of the all-timers. According to a source close the ongoing Big 12 conundrum, one of the options now being considered by Texas A&M is to hit the pause button for a year on its desired move to the Southeastern Conference. Time to sort out the legalese of such a move, ya know?

That's right: A school that on Wednesday had planned a press conference/party down in College Station may now have to wait until June 2013 to leave the Big 12. If the Aggies ever leave at all.

It was only back in June 2010 that Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe saved his league with -- what else? -- money. The conference survived, thanks to TV deals that made all the schools richer. Fox recently agreed to a 13-year contract that pays the Big 12 $1.1 billion. And that's on top of the ABC/ESPN deal that gives the conference $60 million over eight years.

At the time, big money equaled solidarity.

Said Beebe, "We've got more cohesion than ever."

Added Texas president William Powers, "Now we have stability. We're in a far better position than we were three months ago."

Don't look now but that's all bullshit. The Big 12 is a mess.

Oklahoma is eyeing the Pac 12. Texas is considering going Independent. And A&M, according to its president, is being held hostage -- with Baylor holding the gun. Another Aggie joke: A&M has twice been on the verge of joining the SEC, but may not actually get to bolt until the 2013 school year.

If ever.

Baylor -- joined by Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State -- is basically threatening legal action on A&M and the SEC via a claim of tortious interference, saying the SEC is inducing the Aggies to break their contract with the Big 12. Sounds to me like a lot of tampering, but doesn't this happen all the time in sports? In life? You get married, but if someone else better comes along you get divorced and ... poof. Right?

Problem here is the bitchy wife -- Baylor -- is threatening to "take everything!" if A&M leaves. The Baptists have the Ags by the balls. Baylor has big plans. Not just their "Don't Mess With Texas Football" campaign nor Robert Griffin III for Heisman. The Bears have designs on taking their $20 million from the TV contracts next year to renovate Floyd Casey Stadium. But without a Big 12, there is no Big 12 TV contract money. Follow?

I don't blame Baylor for trying to hold onto its paycheck. Without the Big 12 they will be college football nomads, left to roam into the lean pastures of Conference USA or the Mountain West.

Nothing looks good right now. Not A&M in the SEC. Not Texas seceding. Not OU out west.

And especially not Baylor as the new Christian kings of cock-blocking.

Glad to see the aggie reps showed up to comment. Howdy! Isn't that what I am supposed to say while I stay off the sacred turf? Now go grab your ballsack and holler louder. Gotta turn this game around. Those milkmen  down on the field are telling you to holler louder, better do it.Funny how after UT got that money from back east they were all ready to partner up, but when they thought it might cost them a few ducats in an investment they didn't seem too interested. Holler all you want, you had an offer from UT and turned us down. Ya had ya chance.  Fine, sit there, bide your time and then go. Gonna take you a year to figure out the legalese? Well, study up then. I figure half a dozen UT lawyers already have it sussed, but you carry on. Good luck. Yeah, there is something really, reealllly hypocritical about Baylor suddenly being concerned with all things Texas football. They didn't give a rat's ass about Rice, TCU and Cougar High back when the SWC fell apart, but now it is their ox being gored and that shit has got to stop! Heh. Looks like you bought yourself a year, better find a home because this one is falling down.

Especially your comprehension skills.  Legally we're out in '12 if we want to be out - without a judge ever getting the joy of telling poor little Baylor to shut up and go back to total irrelevancy.  Which since we weren't going anywhere before that date anyway - total non story.  I've really never seen anyone quite so jealous of us.  If you weren't such a vile human being it might be kind of cute.

Nobody's threatening legal action against A&M, Ritchie. You're such a fucking hack.  The baptists are threatening to sue the SEC claiming tortious interference.  A&M can and will exit the Big 12 after this season by complying with the exit clause contained in the B12 contract.

Try to keep up but if your brain is too small, just stop writing.

"The Bears have designs on taking their $20 million from the TV contracts next year to renovate Floyd Casey Stadium."  What??? Why???  Baylor played a top 25 team last Thursday in a fantastic game and only 43,000 of the 50,000 seats were filled in the dump they call a football stadium.  And a big chunk of those were TCU fans.

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

Is that a big tarp  covering seats in the end zone? I've always wondered, they're not on tv much so it's hard for me to tell.

bc all the schools promised to use the extra money on athletics i.e. fields, stadiums, workout centers, and not as funds for general university use. Thats why, and baylor hasnt upgraded squat at its school in years

Brett

Baylor has spent a ton to upgrade the program in recent years.  Just look at the new multimillion indoor/outdoor/weight room/ training facility they built two years ago on campus.  I do not think that they are going to renovate Floyd Cassey stadium with the money.  The administration has been talking about an on campus stadium for the past couple of years (since the on campus training center was built).  What I like about this article is that Baylor, as well as other schools, are looking after themselves - just like A&M.  Scott - try to get your facts straight.  I have mine as a Baylor Alum and booster.

ScottsMerkin

well as a baylor alum and booster I hope you have your facts straight.  I as KU fan Ive never liked Baylor being shoved down our throats by gov. richards.  Youve been the ass of the conference for years.  Congrats on beating TCU but no one except for people from Waco and Baylor alum really cares what goes on down there.

I don't have a problem with any of these schools playing "The Game" to keep the conference together, no matter what their own personel interests are. "The Game" needs to be played out. I love the turmoil of this, Baylor saying, "if OU signs off on staying in the Big12 for X years, then we'll sign off on releasing A&M from the contract." OU comes out and says that, "they are looking at a possible conference change." I just don't know what soap opera title to add to this fiasco.

You hear/ed mulitpule rumors coming from the Big12 about additions to the conference, but there is zero rumors/posts of the other schools saying they are being courted by the Big12. So, I would say there is no interests from schools of equal caliber to A&M, let alone Nebraska's status, to sign up with the soon to be corpse known as the Big12.

Edit: with Baylor, along with other schools, saying they won't sign off and sue A&M, also could be seen as a threat towards OU, OSU, Missouri, and Texas if they even consider leaving the Big12.

The bonfire is really nothing for you to throw in anybody’s face. People lost their children in that terrible accident. Argue about sports all you want, make fun of the yell leaders, name drop like you actually know somebody, but don't stoop so low as to make fun or use something like the death of Aggie students as evidence to prove your point that, sorry, but everybody has heard before. Have an inkling of respect for the dead. Yes, they were A&M students, but before that they were human beings.

Don't apply your stupid sports politics to a real world situation.

I wasn't talking about said accident buddy. In fact, noone on my list are dead. I'm talking about the idiocracy that is building a wall of logs and putting an outhouse on top of it. How big a fail is the $300 million unsold tv network that no cable/satellite providers have any incentive to carry? The Pac-12 doesn’t want to let them take tv market share away from their existing networks. They can't even find programming to air if a provider would carry it. Did they just think that they could come up with a network and everything would be ok because it has the word "longhorn" in it? Forget about programming content, existing conference tv contracts, providers to carry the network, and market/consumer research. We're the horns and we can do whatever we want, right? Take your eighth-baked tv network and go independent you stupid arrogant greedy fake douches. You can call your imaginary league the Longhorn Douche Conference and televise it on the Longhorn Network and all the 1,700 Longhorn fans that are dumb enough to spend money on this shit (and actually live where it is available) can actually can only watch you play crappy teams with no existing tv deals (like Rice) as your team vanishes from relevance and recruits stop answering the phone because they want to play for a Texas team in a real conference instead of one that has all-star recruits but can’t beat the cry bears. Muschamp took the last wheel off your wagon and you will never recover.

What about all the little sisters of the poor sending a letter to OU and saying that they would sign off on Agg leaving if OU tripple promised pinkie swore that they would stick around for the remainder of the contract?  That my friends, as Jake Z might say, is SG.

Baylor has no legal basis to sue anybody.  A&M signed a contract with the Big12.  The big 12 contract stipulates an exit fee.  You leave, you pay the fee.  See: Nebraska and Colorado.  A&M is not on the hook for Baylor's future financial success or failure.  The bears look petty and desperate with these acts of desperation.

Admonkey

Baylor's president is Kenneth Starr, and if anyone can keep pointless litigation going on forever, and ever, and ever, he's your guy. Good luck with that, Aggies!

Apparently you don't know as much as you think you do? Otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. Oh, and they might have organized everyone else, but they're not the only team blocking it buddy. In the sales world, it's called a non-compete. Break it and you pay for it. Luckily I haven't been on the bad end of that.

Exactly.  Baylor cannot keep Texas A&M from leaving for the SEC at the end of the current football season ... it's going to happen sooner rather than later.

If a&m wants to go, welp, pay up mother effers.  Can you blame the "small" schools for holding them hostage, for once they actually have some control over whats going and they damn sure are not just going to sign a waiver to hand that power back to the big boys.  That'd be like dumping the only life boat out to sea to save weight on a sinking ship.  WTF did A&M expect?  I dont blame them for wanting to go, but dont get all pissy at the small schools for wanting theirs too.

Uh..., if the contract holds water then maybe the little aggs shouldn't have signed it in the first place if they were thinking of leaving.

anybody see T.Boone last night on the big 12 (or is it 10) game of the day-to paraphrase him, everything will be right with the big 12/10 very soon and equality/parity (on the money split i suppose) will result in all the participants be happy, evidently TU is currently getting the lions' share of the revenue and this aggie/ou/osu exodus (or threat thereof) is going to make TU share the wealth-which is the norm (according to T.Boone) with all the other conferences.  also, it appears that the SEC smelled a rat here, with their insistance on each of the aggies' former conference mates not threatening legal action against the SEC prior to acceptance of the aggies into their considerable revenue stream.
