Jets 27, Cowboys 24: My Top 10 Observer-ations

Categories: Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys-Jets Romo.jpg
10. Tony Romo negated some great throws -- you'll never see a prettier pass than the 64-yarder to Jason Witten -- with some bone-headed plays. His interception to Darrelle Revis should've never been thrown and how was everyone except the quarterback ready for the snap with :08 remaining? And I understand he thinks football is fun, but the smile after the mistake has already gotten old in 2011. Hard to be a Romo backer on a night like this.

9. I'm not a big referee conspiracy guy, but the Cowboys had seven penalties and the Jets ... zero? None? On 9/11? Hmmm.

8. Couple of special teams brain farts contributed to Dallas' epic collapse. Still not sure what Martin Rucker was thinking, but the goal-line referee was visibly prepared to blow Mat McBriar's 59-yard punt dead at the Jets' 1 before the backup tight end inexplicably pounced on it and slid into the end zone for a touchback. (Anyone else thinking Leon Lett?) Then, of course, came Joe McKnight's blocked punt right up the middle in which it sure looked like rookie Alex Albright let him go unblocked to his inside. Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis can't be happy.

7. For all that the Cowboys did right -- Romo's 342 yards passing, holding the Jets to 45 yards rushing, etc. -- it took a comedy of errors to lose this one. Included on that list, a shoulda-been interception by Alan Ball that bounced right off his facemask. Two plays later the Jets took their only lead of the game.

6. Jason Garrett has lost four games as head coach of the Cowboys. By margins of 3, 3, 1 and 3 points.

5. Hello, Sean Lee. Goodbye, Keith Brooking.

4. Disappointing performance by Dez Bryant. For a beast who can physically dominate, he seems awfully fragile. After bruising his thigh on a second-quarter punt return he was a non-factor. Bryant caught three passes for 71 yards in the game's first 7:33, and then was shut out the final 52:17.

3.  More painful: The 2010 season-opening loss to the Redskins on a Sunday night in which Alex Barron negated an apparent game-winning touchdown catch by Roy Williams with a holding penalty? Or the 2011 season-opening loss to the Jets on Sunday night in which the Cowboys blew a 14-point lead in the 4th quarter courtesy of two Romo turnovers, a blocked punt for a touchdown and a 50-yard field goal by a kicker they previously cut? Gotta be this one. NFL teams rarely blow 14-point leads in the 4th quarter. This one feels worse than being blown out.

2. I know this is going to sound blasphemous, but I feel good for Nick Folk making that 50-yard game-winning field goal with 27 seconds remaining. He went to the Pro Bowl with the Cowboys and should have never been cut late in 2009. Cowboys have been chasing someone as good as him ever since.

1. Impossible not to hang this loss on No. 9. It's one thing to make physical mistakes, i.e. bad throws. But it's totally unacceptable for Romo -- in his 62nd NFL start -- to make bad, careless decisions. Fumbling at the 2 with a 24-17 lead in the 4th quarter is simply inexcusable. It's a play made by losers, plain and simple.

All you jokers that bash Romo are real quiet this week. Who do you want for QB? I think Mcnabb will be available. :-)

Romo should retire, go play house with his wife. Play McGee, 0/16 probably gets Luck.

OK, the smile thing.  Tony gets hit in the elbow with the snap and he smiles.  He's on the sidelines at times and appears to be talking about what John Stewart said the night before.  My theory-its focus.  If you watch Roger Federer's face you won't know whether he's winning or losing. I think I remember that same feature of Troy, Except when he was yelling at linemen.  The laser focus I think I see  in Tom Brady and Roger Federer and a few other top athletes isn't as evident in Tony at times.  No problem with him not having that focus on his off days, but on game day I think I prefer a focused quarterback.

I've read some good comments by fans from around the web today. Here are two of my favorites:

…… No matter where you guys get to, you're going to be left sucking wind in depressing fashion because your most important player doesn't have what it takes to be a winner in this league. He's a good guy and lucky in almost every other way except his football life. Brady wouldn't have fumbled. Aikman wouldn't have fumbled. Hell, Vick wouldn't have fumbled. Tony fumbles. He mishandles. He gets picked. He gets hurt. Sorry Cowboys fans but you're tied to an unlucky loser and your fortunes won't improve until he's gone.

It's "hard to swallow" when you're choking.        Seahawks 2007: "I know how hard everyone in that locker room worked to get themselves in position to win that game today and for it to end like that, and for me to be the cause is very tough to swallow right now," Romo said. "I take responsibility for messing up at the end there. That's my fault. I cost the Dallas Cowboys a playoff win, and it's going to sit with me a long time."         Jets 2011: "That was my fault. It’s just disappointing and frustrating right now because we win the football game if I don’t do what I did,” Romo said, according to ESPN reports. “It’s hard to swallow just knowing we lost this game because of me tonight.”

I've realized that Romo and Jay Cutler are basically the exact same QB.

And it's not a compliment to either.

I think that loss was very "Romo friendly"..

I wonder if Romo goes by each of his teammates houses and gives them an "oil change" to make amends for screwing this game up.

Anybody else read Rob Ryan's lips as the game ended? That was an "Awww Fuck You!"

Anyone remember Buddy Ryan punching the Houston Oilers OC (Gilbride I think) after boneheaded decisions? That was flashing through my mind after seeing how pissed off Rob was after the game.

Helluva job Rob Ryan. It's a shame Romo ruined it for you. Romo also ruined a Parcells' playoff victory for the Boys - among other fuck ups. When the heat is on, Romo melts.

Romo reminds me of what Philly fans went through with McNabb, especially the smiling after horrible plays that championship quarterbacks would be steamed about. Bottom line is, if the coaches and teammates aren't in his face about it, then it's not going to change. Garrett smiles just as much during times when he should be visibly pissed. It was great to see Rob Ryan storming the field after the game beyond pissed. Make him the head coach and send Garrett's plastic, camera-conscious, "distinguished" demeanor somewhere else.

Interesting how the team made Wade-era mistakes again when it counted and Wade is gone. Maybe it wasn't just Wade. Or maybe the culture of losing and sloppiness from that time is so ingrained in the current group and Garrett is not capable of fixing it (maybe he helped contribute to it).

One inexplicable coaching decision:  Leaving Dez Bryant in the game when he could no longer run; and why did Romo keep throwing to him (did he not know Bryant was hurt)?

When a young kicker goes through a complete dry spell... you dont fire him. You ride out the storm because on the other side of the drought is hot as fire perfection. Why let someone else reap the rewards? Everyone goes back to there mean. Always.

I knew the game was the jets when i saw the ref was a paison.  No way in hell was he gonna let Dallas come up into NY and beat his hometown team on 9/11.  Anyhow, it wasnt one mistake that cost us the game, but to me the biggest one was the fucking blocked punt.  That special teams TD for the jets was the momentum swinger!

Scruffygeist
Scruffygeist

1 minute after it happened NBC showed the replay that confirmed the punt was a touchback no matter what. Rucker was dumb, but he didn't ruin that.

What stood out to me the most was in the 4th when the showed the graphic comparing the two QBs. It wasn't the graphic, but it was the two heads of Romo and Sanchez. Romo was sitting there looking like a hung over frat boy trying to pay attention during the Economics lecture but was really thinking about how he dominated beer pong last night, while Sanchez was there with a strong, confident, poised look on his face, like he knew even that 15 second recording of him doing nothing was important.

That's what drives me nuts about Romo. Sure, he makes some piss-poor decisions and did last night. But he also can't grasp that perception of his role and demeanor is just as important in people determining you're a leader who can handle being an NFL QB. That includes the hat thing, it includes dumbface expressions, it includes body language, and it includes not forcing plays that just shouldn't be made. The fumble happened. Of course he shouldn't have gone in like that, but it was also a good defensive play. There's no defense for the pick.

His teammates will defend him, alot of prostate-massaging Dallas media will defend him, but don't you expect a 31 year old to be more mature than that? Dirk and Josh Hamilton are around the same age with similar pressure roles on their team, but I've never seen anything wondering about their maturity.

Plan B?? You're crazy.
Plan B?? You're crazy.

Is Romo Andy Roddick?..

I guess we should just be so proud of little Andy. Oh wait.. Nadal, Federer, Djokovic win everything!

Time for Smiley to have the INTANGIBLES to make sound decisions late in football games!!!!

If you're going to say that Romo is to blame for the entire loss, than you're just part of the football ignorant statistic  of people in Dallas. It was also his fault for the blocked punt too right? Would you guys prefer Quincy Carter? How about Drew Henson or Ryan Leaf? Just stop it. By the next Cowboys win, you'll be praising Romo and all his heroics like you always do. No one, including you even figured this game to be close, so give them a break. Seriously, it makes me sad to be a Cowboys fan sometimes with just how dumb people are with football.

Tony Romo = Most over-rated player in pro sports.

The man is not a winner.  There is a reason that he didn't go to a major university and that he went undrafted.  The reason was on full display in the 4th quarter.  Girrard is available.  Pick him up and salvage the season, or get ready for another brutal 6 win season.

you ruined any cred you had by saying out loud to pick up david garrard to salvage a season.  That dude couldnt wear romo's jock on his head if he wanted too.  Some people man.  At this point there is no one better out there to get that what you already have.

OK, upon reflection, you're right.  Girrard isn't the answer.  Not because of capability, rather because of the time it would take to come up to speed on the schemes and his overall lack of intellectual prowess.

Bench Romo, start Kitna.

PlanoDave

Girrard is consistently mediocre.  That beats flashes of brilliance and moments of absolute stupidity.

Girrard is like a marginally cute girl who will cook you dinner, let you hang out with your friends and provide acceptable sex.  Romo is Amy Winehouse.

Amen PlanoDave. Preaching the football gospel. Romo may be above average the majority of the time, but when it counts - when it really counts - Romo shits all over himself and the team. Danny White was a great Cowboys QB, but how many Super Bowls did he win? Romo will be remembered the same way.
