Will This Conference Clustereff Be Good for College Football?

Pac 16.jpg
It's not a matter of if, but merely when. The Big 12 is kaput.

When the Board of Regents at OU and Texas yesterday empowered their respective school presidents (David Boren and Williams Powers) to explore new conference affiliations, it officially signaled the beginning of the end for the Irving-based conference. Schools rarely give the green light to pursue greener pastures and then wind up -- never mind -- remaining home.

In this case it's Pac 12 over staying put.

Despite the naive denial issued yesterday afternoon by Big 12 commish Dan Beebe:

"The actions taken today by the governing boards of the universities of Oklahoma and Texas was anticipated," Beebe said in a statement. "It is my opinion that the case for the Big 12 Conference continues to be as strong today for all of our current members as it was last year, especially considering the welfare of those to whom we owe the greatest responsibility -- the student-athletes. "We continue to apply all effort resources toward assuring our members that maintaining the Big 12 is in the best interest for their institutions."

Baghdad Bob, meet your match.

While Boren says remaining in the Big 12 is "still on the table", don't buy it. The Sooners are headed west with Oklahoma State. Will Texas go with them? I"m still told it's 50/50 on the Longhorns joining the Pac 12 or going Independent in football.

This won't be an easy decision. Don't look for an announcement until October.

While the rest of the college landscape shuffles, it brings up an interesting question:

Will Super Conferences be good for college football?

A&M to the SEC? Notre Dame to the ACC? Pitt and Syracuse leaving the Big East before TCU can even get there? The Big 12 leftovers merging with the Big East? SMU begging for a bigger home?

Texas coach Mack Brown was groaning about parents having to travel farther in new conference alignments. He's right. In the old days Texas played Houston, Rice, Texas A&M, Baylor. Regional schools with local, relevant rivalries. In a new Pac 16 Texas' closest game would be in Lubbock and it would regularly make west-coast trips to places like Oregon and Washington.

I understand USC-Texas will be fun to watch, but I'll miss the Longhorns and Aggies. We're seeing the potential end of the NCAA. Just don't know that, in this instance, if change will ultimately be good.

I see RW is up early....link removed again, again, and again. Don't forget to cut-paste the points, or keep your ears listening to the gentle Musers. You remove links of sports articles, but you allow links of two guys pumping eachothers asses. Wink, I'll keep your little secret.

WTF happened to my last post? RW, did you censor it due it took away a article you could cut-paste from? My post was legit or was it, once I posted a link to a article asking for Bebee's head? Did I step on your little toe's little man? I'll post the link again in another post......at........... newsok dot com

Censorship at the Observer, nice.

So, based on OU's latest demands to save the Big 12, I think it is fair to say that anyone that bitched about A&M's complaints regarding the LHN should turn their vitriol north of the border.

If OU/OSU go west without UT/TT, I don't know if the Pac? will hold spots for them. The Pac could invite BYU and Boise St., not as sexy, but it can be done.

There could be some teams oustide of Baylor holding a big bag after the dust settles: Boise St., TCU, Iowa St., Mizz(if they don't jump at a SEC/Big10 offer).

I wish I was a fly listening in on the calls from Slacker Bebee. The commish is trying to find a landing spot for his sorry ass. Corby says that the Commish is his neighbor, yet the local college sports/Big12 fan hasn't heard squat from him directly, and not under "source". Commish Bebee is sweating this out along with the BigEast commish. The future BigE/Big12 combo platter is going to be a failed bit.

ESPN finally will get their way and own the whole damn thing. After years of shoving that Boise State playoff bullshit down our throats they exploit the Longhorn ego and throw a pile of cash at the confrence square in the middle of the country.

Brilliant plan , welcome to the NFL lite, CFB will soon be gone forever

As long as Baylor gets absolutely screwed I don't care what happens.

Poor Baylor, they will be playing junior colleges by 2014.  Everyone else is following that sweet #ss scrilla. Then there's Baylor....the jilted one, the lonely one.  Welp, atleast they have Waco.

Ok so more post but I give myself leeway bc this isnt about re-alignment.  I think this is total bullsh, a moneygrab, The NCAA doesnt give a shit about the student or athete, its about the money, and now the schools dont give a shit about the student or the athlete.  They have all sold their souls to the devil for the great green prize, and those left holding the bag are the athletes who get nothing except being dragged all across the country for the benefit of the atheletic department and the school name all the while fucking the kids education.  1% of college athletes play professionally but lets make sure we get our dollar while their classroom studies never happen

And for those that say college football/athletics is a business, name me a business that doesnt pay its employees.... and that still exists.

Some of you that have read my posts on the whole conferenece realignment know my love for turmoil, and that's what we have, bigger now with the Big East/ACC junket.

I feel bad for the students, student families, alumni and fans of said schools due to the fact that each institution is chasing the "dragon", ie money, or has been left out of the pool of cash that is being thrown around from the networks. It sucks, that old rivalries will still be played, but on a limited schedule. The commishioner, presidents, regents and such have just flat out fucked the students etc.....

I can't think of the Pac? reaching into Texas or Oklahoma and yet it will. The blame needs to be squarely at the feet of the Big12 commish, and whom ever is pulling his strings from not giving a invitation to two other schools due to any past bad blood, pre-exit of Colorado and Nebraska. There should be/have been a Central US AQ conference. It's just F'n sad, to see this shit go down due to a money grab.

The only local school games I go to is SMU, and I sit on the visitors side, plenty of room there. My affiliation is with the mighty Spartans.............................................of San Jose St.

I'm fine with a move to the Pac16 for the horns...or stay here...or ACC...or the Big 10/12..just effing decide on something and do it.  Sooo tired of hearing about this crap, when we should be talking football.  Perfect season thus far for dang near all the Big 12 teams, quality football is being played and we're talking about practice...sorry...realignment.

what i love the most is that those ankle-tattooed tcu fans have been relegated to their well-deserved mediocre conference.

have fun with houston, baylor and rice!

PS - the SWC wasn't that great.it was average compared to other conferences of the day much like the bevo 9 is now.

Just a rumor but I heard that UT was going join district 12 3a along with Canton ISD, Wills Point ISD, Van ISD, Mabank ISD and Quinland ISD. They will also play a home and home with North Forney ISD, UT feels they just to to "lay low" for a while until this whole "college football" thing shakes itself out.

Reality Check

There is going to be a schism between the big schools and the regionals once the all sport parents realize that they can see most of their kids games in person with a regional exclusive private school scholarship instead of watching the day old stream from across the country on the longhorn website. Texas may still get the big time athletes but the breadth of their overall athletic program will suffer.

"Texas may still get the big time athletes but the breadth of their overall athletic program will suffer."

What the fuck does that mean?  That our water polo team won't be as good anymore?

No, it means that instead of 35 years between football titles, it'll now take 40 years.
