Big 12 Conference Alive, if Not Well

Call it the Pat 12.

As in, no thanks to expansion, we'll stand. As in, the Big 12 -- all but buried by a lot of us dorks -- remains alive, like the muddy, bony, cob-webbed hand reaching up from the grave to snatch onto life.

Again.

Because it couldn't get assurances from Texas about a downsizing and/or equal revenue sharing of the Longhorn Network, the Pac 12 on Tuesday night officially said no thanks to expansion. Meaning Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are still, yes still, a part of the wobbly group of schools known as the Big 12.

But for how long?

Maybe for a long time.

Baylor and Texas want to keep the league afloat, and the Bears will sue Texas A&M when it attempts to bolt to the SEC. Oklahoma will grudgingly remain in the Big 12, but only -- according to this story -- with the ouster of commissioner Dan Beebe.

Another Big 12 school -- Missouri -- is being courted by the SEC. But with the Big 12 back in business, that move is also on pause.

Frustrated by the lack of assurance from Texas, Pac 12 commissioner Larry Scott never took a vote on expansion. Nor did, turns out, the four Big 12 schools officially apply for membership. Said Scott in a statement:

"After careful review we have determined that it is in the best interests of our member institutions, student-athletes and fans to remain a 12-team conference. While we have great respect for all of the institutions that have contacted us, and certain expansion proposals were financially attractive, we have a strong conference structure and culture of equality that we are committed to preserve."

The board of regents at Texas and Oklahoma on Monday voted to give their presidents the right to choose a new conference. Oklahoma State's regents have scheduled a special meeting Wednesday about conference realignment. Said OU president David Boren in a statement:

"Conference stability has been our first goal and we look forward to achieving that goal through continued membership in the Big 12 Conference."

What does it all mean? Hell if I know.

Best guess? That when A&M is finally allowed to leave for the SEC, BYU will become the Big 12's 10th team. OU's Big 12 patch-up plan also, however, calls for Longhorn Network reform.

Stay tuned.

I recommend watching HBOdotCOM Real Sports episode 174, regarding the business of college bowls. Pathetic, what gready mofo's do  in college sports. I darn near want to say it's ok to any recruit, take as much money as you can, the downsides of being caught don't outweigh the upside.

Missouri needs to get out while the getting is good...... big 12 is falling apart and no one care to go watch MU play no-name teams (which is who is left if OU and TX go)....

Call me confused. The Pac 12 is on hold because of UT? What happened to UO calling the shots?I can't remember who it was last night on ESPN that was reporting, but what he heard is that the teams that would be in the east "pod" would not agree to it because it would limit their west coast games against USC and UCLA. I'm thinking more of, they don't want to get their asses handed to them, they'd rather have Colorado and Utah join because they can handle up on them. Mizzou to the SEC? What the... wait a second. You can't convince me that this entire thing is about a network that most carriers aren't even carrying.  I'm with UO on wanting to fire Beebe. He let Nebraska and Colorado go, and didn't replace them. Oh, and you want BYU to be your 10th? Guess what, they have their own network(for some fucking reason I have that channel, thanks a lot UVerse). What are you going to do about that? Who's playing better football right now? The Big 12 or Pac 12? I can't believe the Big 12 is crumpling. This is just a clusterfuck. Backwards thinking by the Pac-12, they have an opportunity to add 3 powerhouses(sorry tech) but they're letting a tv deal get in the way? Head scratcher to me.

At least this makes ScottsMerkin happy. His Jayhawks will have a football home for a little bit longer instead of going to the Little East or reformed C-USA.

Conference realignment talk....meh.

In other news, Lewin is doing play by play on Fox this weekend for Rangers/Mariners! Awesome! I wish Nolan would hire him back. I think Dave Barnett would rather do radio anyway. They can move him back, kick Busby's ass to the curb, and put Lewin back in the seat he belongs in. Make it happen nolan!

I think that if Texas A&M leaves the big 12 should go after TCU a Texas team and a hot one right now plus gives the big 12 a team in the DFW and very good college football market

UT and the Longhorn Network are a cancer to the Big 12.

Code for: Non-UT schools: all remaining Big12 schools want equal revenue sharing.UT: we built the network, you guys signed off on it, we're keeping it.Pac-12: revamp the LHN or no deal.A&M: OU/OSU, come with us.TT: who has a problem with our 150th academic ranking?OU/OSU: SEC, maybe, that card hasn't been played, forcing UT to go independent.Iowa St/Baylor: we're already spending the future tv revenue money, CRAP.TCU: Texas still doesn't want us in the Big12.SMU: Hello, we're here.Colorado/Nebraska: GiggleBebee: would you like to upsize that for just a quarter more.

The big 4 and the aggs are still going to bolt.  Just be patient, it will happen..and I expect for the Pac 12 to get 4 new members...and the SEC will get the aggs.

So to recap, nothing to see here..SSDD.

The Big 12 has plans to extend an invitation to Boise State. But because Boise is actually a city and not a state, insiders say that a subsequent invitation is to be extended to Texas City in order to achieve balanced scheduling.

I think this bitch survives and the big 12 returns to 12 teams within a year or two.  The fox money is great, the ESPN deal is up for bid in 2014 the conference has all it needs except for a few more teams.....and what teh hell channel is the BYU channel.  I do enjoy the Big 10 network though.  Thats what the big 12 should have modeled their network after. C'mon Ut, let LHN go and think bigger, No one carries the damn thing so no one will see you, put a Bg 12 network national and everyone wil see you

Just Me
Just Me

DFW is a UT market first, an A&M market second, an OU market third, and maybe a TCU market fourth (although Tech and SMU might argue about that).  Adding TCU does nothing for a new TV deal, which is what this is always about.

I can't get enough of it. The twists and turns! Every day new news! Intrigue! Finger-pointing! Whining, Bitching and lots and lots of cash! This is like a sports soap opera.Yes, this has been a guilty pleasure I have relished.

The BYU channel is in the 500's on uverse. Most of the time they're showing movies, which is the funny thing. It's the BYU channel, but not all sports.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath. The Big 12 is a good conference, great football teams, great basketball teams, great baseball teams, track, etc. What's the point of being absorbed into other conferences? A&M is trying to be Nebraska. The problem is, Nebraska is an institution in Nebraska.

As far as the LHN goes, who gives a damn about it. They're showing UT reruns, UTSA games, and other stuff. Even if they show conference games, who cares? The BTN shows all the Big Ten games, even if they're on the network, right?

Josh's broken records
Josh's broken records

As long as UT gets to keep 95%, I'm sure they'd let everyone join in the reindeer games.  I'm with Rooster, had tired head for a year and a half with this crap.  Just do something, or be quiet about it until something is done.

Keep in mind the Mountain West is up to things and may try to align with Conference USA to somehow get a BCS bid. It's rumored TCU is mulling staying in the MWC and bailing on the Big East.

Yes, I'm biased as an alum, but because of the TV market, academics, geography, and enrollment the best candidate for the Big 12 (after BYU) may very well be Colorado State. More goes into it than just football team success, and that move would get the Denver market right back after losing CU. And Denver means far more as a TV market than anything New Mexico or Idaho can provide.

ScottsMerkin
ScottsMerkin

at this point, they have the TV deal they want, There is only so much money to go around, and you wont find a big market school that wants to join the big 12 know ing how this bitch is ran.  So you are looking at TCU, Boise St BYU and what, New Mexico?

if colorado st is 106.1, then what is 105.3?cuz they get their ass kicked month in/month in their target demo (MEN 25-54) by that girlie station 106.1.translation: 106.1 programs to GIRLS, but has more MEN 25-54 listeners than 105.3.

Well there are 2 problems, very distinct and seperate:

1.  I dont think its content that is the problem now with the other schools, the NCAA basically said they couldnt play HS games on it, Its more about the extra $300 million Ut is getting for the network that is at issue, its anticompetitive to the league.

2.  Content is the problem with the network.  What major cable company wants to pay the rates ESPN wants for it to be on the basic tier, when they really are only showing 1 or 2 football games a year.  and a couple  of  basketball games.

Oh and I would like to personally thank UT for paying us to be the 2nd game of the year on the LHN this year
