Cowboys 27, 49ers 24 (OT): My Top 10 Observer-ations

Categories: Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo - 49ers.jpg
10. Like me, were you scared to death that Jesse Holley was going to fumble while holding the ball up in premature exclamation at the end of his 77-yard overtime catch?

9. Rob Ryan may be a defensive genius, but it doesn't show when he has Anthony Spencer trying to cover tight ends 30 yards down field.

8. Who's worse? Jon Kitna throwing the ball or Alan Ball covering a receiver? I know Kitna had a touchdown and Ball an interception, but neither are plus players.

7. Was one of the refs actually using a pager to get info from the booth confirming Kyle Williams' second-quarter touchdown catch?

6. One of the biggest forgotten plays of the day was the offside penalty on San Francisco linebacker Ahmad Brooks. Without it, the Cowboys are down 14-0 and punting from their own 42 with only three minutes left until halftime. Instead, after a stay of execution it was Romo to Miles Austin for 53 yards and his first of three receiving touchdowns. From there, game on.

5. Wait, is that a picture of a scantily clad woman on the back of Rob Ryan's play sheet? Yes, I believe it is.

4. If you're going to totally blame Romo for last week's meltdown, you've got to give him full credit for Sunday's comeback. He broke a rib on the game's third play when Brooks beat Kyle Kosier and planted a helmet just under the quarterback's armpit upon release of a pass caught by Jason Witten. Hurting, down 10 on the road and with no Dez Bryant, no running game and taking snaps from backup center Kevin Kowalski, Romo generated a victory in a game the Cowboys had no business winning. Sorta like last week he made mistakes in a loss the Cowboys had no business losing. Regression Romo, meet Redemption Romo. Call it even?

3. Confidence level in Dan Bailey as he lined up for the potential game-tying 48-yard field goal on the last play of regulation? On a 1-10, 1. Gutsy, gorgeous kick. He also pushed wide right a 21-yard field goal, which has to be the shortest miss in franchise history.

2. Obviously Romo's pass to Holley was perfect, but the play-fake to Tashard Choice was also a beauty. Pulled safety Donte Whitner in for a step and a half-count, allowing Holley to get seperation down the field.

1. Join me in apologizing to Holley. The reality-show star is now officially a real football player. Never thought I'd see it happen. Glad I did.

Romo, the great back-up

4. I give him credit for being in that position to begin with. that has always been the problem. he may have certain skills but no control of the game like when to turn it on and off. I remember the quote against the redskins "you didn't think we'd score a touch down?!?!"No, I didn't think you could win any worse or couldn't score for 99% of the game against such a bad team. I really want to see them play a team that's not in a fight to let them win and see if he can bounce back from failure. Look at Aikman's stats there were years he threw more ints than tds and he never threw alot of yds or tds to begin with but i would definately want to compare W/L in big gamesTrent Dilfer has a ring!!!!

I think number 6 has actually been pointed out about a million times. It wasn't forgotten by anyone.

No way Greggo was fired. CBS knows that he is the reason people tune in to RAGE. They don't do it for Sybil's stuff. It looks like he may have took some ambien and went on a twitter tear. No big deal. Greggo is a little weird on the twitter anyway. Always begging people to follow him.

It's gonna take Greggo back on Hardline for it to be good again.

#2 If it was a thing of beauty why did the boys only capitalize on it in overtime when they were running the same thing (trying to take advantage of the 49er safeties biting on the run) all game long? hint: 49ers safety thought the cb had Holley because they were in "quarters" coverage.

Looks like we have some censorship going on in the ole Sportatorium today. A whole thread was just taken down.

Let's slow down on Holley being a real NFL player here.

Kinda like how it seemed like he slowed down on the 77 yard catch.

Any real NFL receiver runs that thing in without a problem. Holley had at least 6 yards between him and the nearest defender when he caught the ball in stride and was still caught from behind. Not saying he doesn't deserve credit, and it wasn't awesome, but the reason he's not a starter was as evident on that play as was the reason he is still on the roster and not playing in Arena league.

Greggo has moved on from 105.3 to begin his television series re-imagining of Sport Perspectives 2.

Relax fan fans, Sweet Greggo wasn't fired, he was talking about not being on cowboys pre/post.

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37" HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use http://x.co/ZnQl

A few other things about the game --

*The Cowboys had 9 carries for 7 yards at halftime.  The running game is brutal.

*When Felix Jones was injured, one of the commentators noted that Dallas is fortunate to have three halfbacks who all have the same big, physical, attacking style.  I'm not sure that's the scouting report on Dallas's backs.

*Sean Lee led the team in tackles, and he had an outstanding tackle against Ted Ginn, Jr. on a punt return.  It's only been two games this year, but Lee might be the real deal.

*Dan Bailey missed a 21-yard field goal and David Buehler gave up a 43 yard return to Kendall Hunter.  If the Cowboys are going to keep two kickers, each one of them needs to be doing a better job at the one thing each is being asked to do.

*Miles Austin is fast and hard to tackle.  He had three touchdowns in this game to prove it.  He also had several passes come to him that, while difficult, should have been made by a number one receiver.

*Tony Romo hit a Niner defender in the head with a pass at one point.  If the player had been looking up, he could have returned an interception for a touchdown.  There seems to be more weird plays in Cowboys games than any other games.

*Again, it's only been two weeks, but it looks like Rob Ryan really knows how to stop the run.  Two weeks in a row now the Cowboys have been very stingy on the ground.  Frank Gore only managed 2.4 yards a carry this week.

*DeMarcus Ware has four sacks on the season already.  It could be a rough year for opposing quarterbacks.  Ware is drawing double teams left and right, freeing up the front seven to concentrate on the aforementioned run-stopping.

*This week had the same feeling as last week, only in reverse.  Last week, even though Dallas was winning, when Romo fumbled, it just felt like the Cowboys were going to blow the lead.  This week, when Romo came back out in the field in the fourth quarter, it just seemed like Dallas was going to come back and win.

*I'm going to need Phil Costa to stop doing his Andre Gurode impression on some of his shotgun snaps.

Here's the thing with the fuck Romo/yeah Romo crowd.  Romo completely dicked up game 1.  He responded game 2.  Problem with Romo is he dicks up more than he responds.  1 playoff win does not a QB make.  If after this season Romo doesn't show a championship of some sort.  Well, I'm offically a fuck Romo follower.

you shouldn't be so concerned about football games, apparently there are 'big doings' going down. i know i'm scared.

Fuck all the Romo haters, look at his 4th quarter stats you cunts! Sorry he's no aikman but guess what there will never be one, there will never be another brady or Manning. He doesn't play D or special teams he isn't to blame when a punt gets blocked you insignificant fucks! Go fuck your mothers!

Quality (re)hash, Chef.

Cowboys are gonna win the super duper bowl again.

Nice playing by Holley.

Austin exhibited athleticism.

Should be 2-0, but 1-1 is what was expected.

Rangers won again..and were up by 4.5 games as of this morn.

What a game, And yes every single romo hater who wanted him traded or cut Fuck you.  thats why Ill take Romo you can have Kitna or mcgee.  Can we put to bed the idea that Romo isnt tough.  He tried to play with a broken shoulder and now played with a fractured rib.

Rob Ryan is a Defensive Romo, he is crazy, 95% of the time he is genius, but when he misses, its bad.

Jesse Holley went from Meh, to Yeah in 3 catches, but Id rather a healthy dez, miles, ogletree, anyday

Pagers, yeah, to confirm TD's dont need to be reviewed

Whats up with Greggo, he went off the deep end on twitter today.  Hope you make it through ok.  Let is know when the lawyers begin moderating this blog for greggo purposes

7. Are you being sarcastic?

Yes. That's how the refs get the info from the booth. I don't have the Cowboys/NFL boner that you do, and I've seen a story on it at least a dozen times.

Good thing I saved my "Where's Greggo?" signage.

The problem with you statement ms. Robles is, there in about 1 person who claims to be a fan fan, and of those that have commented so far not a single on is a fan fan.  Also what color is the thong today?

Double Douche
Double Douche

That is incorrect according to my sources.

I was on the UTA campus earlier this evening and ran into one of Richie Whitt's long lost original hairs.

The hair said, "While Greggo didn't do anything wrong - meaning he's sober - The Fan and CBS Radio have decided to move away from the white trash demo of North Texas."

The hair went on to say, "Greggo has been reaching out to those at 1310AM The Ticket. He wants to bury the hatchet and make truly great radio again."

The hair and I spoke at length off the record. He did allow me to divulge one secret: The hairs Richie had transplanted came of his pubic region. The hairs that were removed from the back of his head went to his pubic region. Richie cited a need to not look like he's "had a perm down there" and to have his "carpet" match the "drapes".

Good Day!DD

If your biggest argument that Romo is a stud is that he played better than his backup, you are pretty pathetic.

Where in the fuck did you come up with that assessment DildoDave?  No mention of stud or his back-up.  My point being, if you have the ability to understand mind you, is that if he doesn't do something this year he's done with the Cowboys.  Now quit drooling on the window sill and get back to coloring within the lines, if possible.  Asshat.

ScottsMerkin

perspective then on last week, it was the fucking JETS, the #1 D in the NFL, what would you expect, they baited him into that throw.  Cowboys fans are so finicky FUCK.  and Kitna wasnt good, if you say Romo's turnovers were bad last week, what were kitnas 2 picks this week?  The Boys dont win this game with Kitna in

No storm in Burleson. Seeing some lightening and hearing thunder, but I think it's moving just east. Did Charles even get hit when his knee went out? As they started to show the replay I looked away. Seeing stuff like that makes me vomit.

hey no prob, the plainsman actually posted his link twice last night and had it removed.  I posted it to see if it would stay, and I think so far int survived

And looking at it now Dave, please, by all means, I need a more derogative name than genius.  Seriously, thanks for the back up.  So many are now on the "see Romo can do it" team, but they just don't get it.  And it's not just Romo.

The secondary was being picked apart by a below average QB.  Holley holding the ball like a loaf of bread 10 yards before the end zone.  Garrett's play calling with a pass back while Romo, amazingly, was in the zone on a scoring drive.  Romo with another early bone-headed interception.  Injuries aplenty...game 2 of the season.  This against the 49er's, a league nobody.  And the cake topper, you have a coach who has zero faith in his own offsense he elects to keep the 3 instead of taking the fresh set of downs at our 25!!!  And all I hear is "all you Romo haters need to eat crow".  The Cowboys didn't find a way to win...the 49er's found a way to lose.

I just can't take it which is why I responded the way I did without thinking.  I want this team to win more than any, but this win means dick.  It really confirms my fears.  All the Kool-Aid drinkers see the highlights.  I see the game, as I now know you do as well, we'll be lucky for an 8-8 without better calls from Garrett and more guts from the players.

Again, sorry.

Hey, genius.

Thanks for playing, though.
