Whitt's End: 8.26.11

Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*On the verge of totally imploding within a week, the Rangers can restore order by simply winning this weekend's series against the Angels. Remember, the Mavericks lost four in a row in early April and most of us wrote the season off. But, seriously, who the hell is Omar Quintanilla and where did the comfortable AL West lead run off to?

*And now, as if it wasn't already thin enough, the Cowboys' offensive line takes a hit with a knee injury to Phil Costa that will sideline him 2-4 weeks. Not sure who the team's backup center is at this point, and I'm real certain that the No. 3 tackle -- behind Tyron Smith and Doug Free -- isn't on this roster. Danger, indeed.

*As expected, Texas A&M filed official paperwork to leave the Big 12. Could happen as soon as tomorrow when the Big 12 Board of Directors meet to discuss the conference's flimsy future. The Aggies are still a joke. Now they'll just be the SEC's punch line. As for replacing A&M, the Big 12 will get interest from SMU. Yep, I said S-M-U.

*Shame, shame, Rangers fans. Against the Red Sox and in the middle of a pennant race an announced 29,000 that looked and sounded more like 9,000 showed up at Rangers Ballpark. Whether the scapegoat is the heat or school starting, it's lame. Team deserves better than that.

*It's no surprise to this lil' corner of the blogosphere, but Cam Newton sucks. Watch him attempt to take a 7-step drop and throw an accurate 10-yard pass on an in route and you'll see too. The first, most important quality in a quarterback is acute passing accuracy and Newton doesn't have it. Never has. On the other hand, the Redskins' John Beck looks like a player.

*Hot.

*Not.

*No matter what you think of the Rangers planned Stone Monument, the tribulations of Shannon Stone and his family are gut-wrenching.

*I'd like soccer better if goalies couldn't use their hands. I'd like dogs better if they didn't have tongues.

*Excited about UFC 134 Saturday night from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Anderson Silva hasn't lost a fight since January 2006, and it was mucho controversial. Silva landed an illegal kick to Japanese stud Yushin Okami in that fight, and was disqualified when his opponent claimed he couldn't recover to continue fighting. So guess who comes a calling in Silva's backyard this time around? Yep, Okami. Revenge is best served in front of the home folks. I pity Okami in this one.

*Saw Abby Wambach at a San Francisco Giants' game this week identified as "our World Cup hero." Don't most heroes win?

*Not that I'm expecting much from Cowboys-Vikings Saturday night -- other than watching the starters play into the third quarter -- but Dallas has a pretty special history in Minnesota. The Hail Mary in '75. Tony Dorsett's 99-yard run in '83. And, in case you forgot, the team's last playoff game in January 2010.

*If you cheered the Rangers at old Arlington Stadium in the '70s you'll love this
