Rangers: 2 Losses + 2 Trades = Better Team

Your Rangers lost two of three in Toronto over the weekend, and came out of it a distinctly better team.

How's that?

Texas was handcuffed by (again) Brett Cecil Friday night and by Brandon Morrow Sunday afternoon. But more importantly, GM Jon Daniels pulled off two trades that instantly have transformed the Rangers' bullpen from one of the worst in baseball to one of the best.

You may think the Rangers gave up too much in parting with 25-year-olds Tommy Hunter and Chris Davis for Orioles reliever Koji Uehara, and too much in parting with AA pitching prospects Joe Wieland and Robbie Erlin for Padres' set-up man Mike Adams. But with two of baseball's toughest relievers serving as the appetizer to closer Neftali Feliz, the Rangers may have just won the AL West (and more) by turning their games into 6-inning contests.

Hunter and Davis, as they say in baseball, were "blocked." Hunter by the development of Matt Harrison and Derek Holland; Davis by Mitch Moreland and his own inability to hit Major-League pitching. Wieland and Erlin are good prospects, but neither is considered to have ace potential.

Said Daniels in a conference call: "We didn't necessarily move any pieces we felt were going to be long-term fits."

The Rangers didn't touch prospects such as Martin Perez, Jurickson Profar or Leonys Martin for the future. And for the present they fortified their bullpen.

Simply put, Uehara and Adams don't let batters on base. They are Nos. 2 and 3 in the bigs this year in on-base percentage. Not sure whether Adams will pitch the 8th and Uehara the 7th or vice-versa, but I am certain Texas got two of the best back-end bullpen guys in baseball.

Uehara, 36, has pitched 16 scoreless innings over his last 14 appearances, including one yesterday for Texas in Toronto. And Adams, 33, has an ERA of 1.66 the last four years. The Rangers are in "Go for it!" mode. Today. Not tomorrow.

Even better, both are -- or soon will be -- signed through 2012 so they're not 8-week rentals like Cliff Lee in 2010. In the final analysis, Adams might be a more shrewd move than even Heath Bell.

And the Rangers are a better team this morning.

Is Rangers Team MVP Beltre gonna be ready for the all important four games in Anaheim in two weeks?

Uehara and Adams are no doubt great additions to the team. It remains to be seen if they can pitch as well when they have the pressure of an actual pennant race hanging over them. Its a totally different ballgame than it is pitching for shit teams that were out of it in May. And honestly, you could take Oil Can Boyd to San Diego right now and he could have a 2.00 era in Petco.

I like the Uehara trade a lot; the Rangers may have slightly overpaid but it was with guys they didn't really have a use for so it's really not a big deal.  I don't think the Adams deal is horrible but I wouldn't have done it - I like Erlin (20 yrs old, currently at Double-A, 257 Ks and 30 BBs in 240 minor-league innings) and Weiland (21 yrs old, currently at Double-A, 379 Ks and 72 BBs in 404 minor-league innings) a lot and while I realize you have to give something to get something usually, I would have preferred to have traded one of these guys (preferably Weiland) and a positional prospect, or just not done the deal.  Especially once they got Uehara.

Agreed. Wieland and Erlin have value even if they are not considered 'ace' material. I think the Rangers must feel pretty good about other pitchers in the system down at the A level in order to let these two go.  Wieland no-hit the SA Missions Friday night (pretty strong AA offensive lineup). After the trade was announced last night the two pitchers had to travel less than 200 feet to occupy the Missions dugout (Padres AA team).

The bullpen needs all the help it can get. Rhodes and Oliver are old, Feliz keeps trying to help the other team win and Lowe is just average. Like someone posted here last week(RDP1 I think) Once the starter is pulled no lead is safe.If anything, we need more help in the bullpen. I would prefer it we could get a R handed hitter but I want more pitching if we have to choose. Pitching pitching pitching

I agree with the 'pitching, pitching, pitching' mantra but I don't think that mantra expires in 2012 unless the Mayans prove to be correct after all.  I don't think trading for Mike Adams is a bad move per se; I think trading two very good, young Double-A pitchers with stellar strike-out ratios for Mike Adams is a bad move.  Not John Hart bad, mind you, but especially once they got Uehara, I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on this particular deal.

Tentatively at this point, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Rangers try to move Feliz back into the starting rotation next year, with Adams becoming the closer, especially if Wilson goes away in free agency.

Whitt, you're as frustrating as Chris Davis. You went and threw out a good quality, well-written post without referencing yourself. We all know you're capable of this each and every time, but frequently you go out there swinging and missing.

Nice work. Keep it up, please.

Rangers went and picked up two strong pieces for nothing they will miss while this World Series window is still open. Damn good moves.

Nice recap, Mr. Whitt.  Well done.

Stars and Cowboys take note, this is how team management is supposed to perform.  Fill gaps and bring good players into the org.

Really? Jerrah seems to think its all about bright lights, press conferences and Super Bowl celebrations before the season starts. Jones is the Lebron/Wade of football.

Yes, really.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but you appear to suck at "comprehend".

Just pointing out how Jerry tries to be flashy and "cool" instead of just running a team and trying to win. The Rangers just play baseball. The Cowboys should just play football.Jerry would rather have someone on the team how makes headlines instead of plays.

The Adams move was certainly a shrewd move RW, everyone wanted him..and we got him for what SD wanted for Bell.  And he's signed through next year, so the Neffy to the rotation move can start up next year again.  JD continues to impress/amaze, methinks he set the market when he traded Uehara...then turned around and sent the two guys that SD wanted for Bell to them but made them send us Adams instead.  Remember Bell walks at the end of the year, if he signed with an also ran, you'd get a supplemental and a 2nd rounder...not a First rounder and a supplemental pick.We still need another right hand batterman, but JD does big work after the trade deadline too.  Have faith Redshoe fans, we gonna be alright.

Hey douche bag we don't need another right handed bat, we have plenty. We need the righties to actually hit ( Kinsler, Cruz, Andrus, Yorvi, Beltre, Napoli, Young, Teabags, Gentry all righties). You are as clueless as you say Richie is. Idiot

JD is Midas...Barring injuries, we could see another deep run this year, if not win it all...Exciting times!!

Holy shit. Starting the day off with a Rangers post.... Love the moves, and you put it well,Davis and Hunter were c-blocked here. Good luck to those guys. I really like Mike Adams, I had him on my SFBL team, but he wasn't sexy with the roto stats. Never any wins or saves, but damn good ERA.

I look forward to your next blog post or 3rd post regarding the whole fiasco on Friday. Put that cup in after you hit send.

Strong recap RW. Rangers really need to get 2 of 3 in Detroit, especially since they are luckin out and missing the great Verlander.

smart moves by JD,  lets hope we dont see either of the 41 y.o. brothas pitching in the 8th anymore.  Now if we could just get CJ's bad luck turned around.  I predict the Rangers hammer the tigers tonight, only bc the tigers starter is on one of my fantasy squads
